Hi, I have a few questions. I’ve been out of boating for a few years. My last boat was a Grady White 192 with a 150 Yamaha.

I’m really interested in the 21’ Ranger Tug. I would like to see some in the Long Island/Connecticut area. Why do some come with Yanmar engines and others have the Volvo? Are the different engines exclusive to certain model years? Why do some have 20hp and others have 30hp? Is that specific to certain years? Are any model years more problematic than others? If so, why? Thank you and happy boating!

Hey Bob. As a previous owner of a 2009 R-21 EC here’s my input. The diesel engine on the R-21 up until about 2018 or so
(correct me if I’m wrong) was the Yanmar 3YM30 engine. Three cylinders and 30 HP. There abouts the engine was changed over to the Volvo. Now mind you, Yanmar people are Yanmar people and well, I won’t say anything about Volvo people. Suffice it to say, IMO, the Yanmar engine cannot be beat. Easy to work on and simple in design and function. The earlier models of the 21 had a 20HP Yanmar diesel engine and unless your boating in very calm waters I think ( because I have no experience with the 20 HP engine) the 20 HP is underpowered. We absolutely loved our 21-EC but decided to move up a bit to the 23 for some more space (we ain’t getting any younger).
Cheers,
Karl

Thank you Karl. I’ll keep looking on this site for one. My preference would be the Yanmar engine 30hp. I’m hoping to find one soon complete with a trailer.

I believe Yanmar was used up until 2014 +/-, then changed to Volvo until 2017+/- (mine's a 2016 w/Volvo), then changed back to Yanmar for a short while until the 21 was discontinued. I'm not sure the EC version ever had the 20hp, but could be wrong. Welcome to the Forum.

Ok, thank you very much!

Yachtworld.com is probably the best site to see used RTs and CWs for sale. This site too for FSBO boats. You greatly improve your chances of finding a good used boat if you expand your search area.
PS: This summer seems to be a Sellers Market on both coasts. If you find a good boat be prepared to act.
