I would like to ensure that I have an isolated start battery on the R27. As I understand it, in the current battery system the start battery is not 100% isolated.

Do I understand this correctly and if so, can you advise on isolating the existing battery or adding a 5th dedicated start battery?

I have a 2011 R27, with the Yanmar, no gen set, no ac, and a solar panel.

Thanks,

Tom

Add a start battery with an isolator to keep it charged. Then if a starting problem arises, switch over to it. A Blue Seas SPDT switch will do it nicely

It is and it isn't isolated. There are charge relays that kick in and join the batteries when specific circumstances exist. Keep it simple. You do not need an extra start battery. You will have more issues with the house. You can join the thruster battery to the house either with a permanent connection or with a battery switch between the house bank and thruster so you can isolate it if you want to. This is a very easy modification. You have a combine switch between the house bank and engine if your engine battery fails. I also have a 2011 R-27. The Yanmar needs and wants perfect grounds and power. I added a second ground from the engine battery to the engine block. Also make sure the leads from the engine battery to the ECU are clean and secure.

Hello Tom,

Mike is spot on. In order to charge underway you need the ACR's to kick in and then when the voltage drops (once the motor is off) you need the ACR's to isolate. Luckily it's automatic so you can't accidently forget a step. The ACR's have been very reliable for us just as a side note.

what about the propane solenoid? isnt it on the starter battery.

Don't think so, but electrical connections are not always consistent. It is easy enough to check out. If it is, just switch it over to the house.
