Traded our Marlow Hunter 40 on a new Claret Red R29CB. Closed yesterday. My wonderful wife had put up with my sailing for a number of years and our MH40 was an absolutely beautiful boat. I have another twenty or so years of sailing in me, but my wife was just not comfortable while underway. We now have a vessel with more forward facing seating making it easier for her to “see the road” in front of us, as well as a vessel that will go faster than 8.5 kts over the earth (our boat as fast for a sailboat).
I’d like to thank the members of this forum who responded to my private messages regarding seaworthiness of the tugs, as well as a few other questions I had. Yes we went for a sea trial and the R29 handled nicely in about 20kts of wind and 1-2 foot chop, but that’s only a small window into a boat’s capabilities. Having sailed 22-40 footers the past twenty years in the waters between NYC and Martha’s Vineyard, including LIS, Buzzard’s and Narragansett Bays, I had a comfort level and know where the limits are with a sailboat. Your input and all the posts I read on this forum have helped.
It was already a challenge shoehorning our junk from the 40 foot sailboat into the R29. We had two staterooms, a large salon and galley, two heads with showers and tons of closets and cubbies for storage on the sailboat. Add to that the fact that I’m a perennial Boy Scout who likes to be prepared for almost any contingency, and that my wife loves serving platters- lots of ‘em. There’s a little less storage and cubbies on the R29 so I’ll need to be creative and a little more judicious when deciding what to keep on board and where it goes.
So we’re excited and looking forward to a little different type of adventure with the tug.
