Update...

Kenny has told me our R-21EC with full tank of fuel reached 9.5 to 10 kts at an engine RPM of 3150. Niceeeee. 😀

Hello Barry,

Could you varify which Acme prop your boat has? I'm guessing it is their #224.

Did you go with the mini or standard Rozendal tri-lens radar reflector?

Thanks,

dave

Went with Mini Rozendal trip-lens.

Will post later on propeller specification.

Curious as to what parts were used in the Garmin 741xs NEMA 2k system to read the coolant temp,RPMs, engine hours and battery voltage.

The Garmin NMEA 2K Gateway box is the size of a pack of 20 cigs and is installed inside the side control panel high up. A NMEA 2K backbone network cable is installed along with this so it can talk to the Garmin 741XS. I'm unsure what connection from the engine to the Gateway was used. I would chat with Andrew Custis at Ranger Tugs for more details.

Our Ranger gray R-21EC will be delivered this week on Wednesday after the JIT (Just In Time) King Marine installs the Charcoal gray Bimini and enclosure on Tuesday. 😀

Hello Barry

I'm excited for you to get your new boat… The day after tomorrow!

I'm curious about the RPMs quoted. Perhaps that wasn't at wide open throttle that Kenny got 3150 rpm's. On my Yanmar – equipped 21 EC I would get about 3800 rpm's with the #650 propeller. On the other hand I get 3150-3200 rpm WOT with the Acme #224 which is more aggressive than the #650.

Maybe the Volvo is a lower – revving engine.

dave

Dave: I'm sanity checking the prop info Kenny sent to me.... later.... 🙂

[EDIT] Kenny told me... "The Volvo and Yanmar have two different WOT RPM's."

Does this mean my Volvo Penta D-31 engine burns less fuel at WOT than does the Yanmar using the #650 at WOT ?

Maybe we should compare fuel burn numbers for your R-21EC and mine at WOT ! See http://www.boat-fuel-economy.com/volvo-penta-diesel-d4-260-300-fuel-consumption-us-gallons

Best Wishes and congratulations Barry! Sounds like a perfect fit. I know that the canvas from Dave at King will be top notch.

More fun less work....what a deal.

Spoke with Dave today. He and his company are very busy at this time of the year. Our R-21EC will be delivered to us this week on Wed and on Tue King Marine will be installing the canvas (top and enclosure) in Sunbrella Charcoal Tweed. Since this product was ordered sight unseen we are anxious about how well it will go with the overall look of the boat and its Ranger gray hull color.

The side vinyl glass will be 40 gauge.

Here's the Charcoal Tweed sample.... 🙂

I asked about trailering with the top + enclosure in place and he strongly advised me not to do this unless it's just a few miles on secondary roads. Trailering on freeways with the top + enclosure in place is a big no-no in Dave's mind... just take a look at those that do this and see the terrible destruction on a pricey boat option.

The King Marine canvas being installed... (Charcoal Tweed). The side enclosure had not been started at this point. I believe there are some 7 zipped panels with 40 gauge clear marine coated flexible vinyl. I'm told all the canvas can be removed easily while leaving the frame intact, so readying the boat for trailering will not be tiresome and the canvas can be stowed in the V-berth.

The two King Marine workers were very friendly and I could see they knew what to do especially when drilling into the fiber glass for attachments and clips etc. I was a bit nervous when they did start drilling.

I liked the way they strung two white lines criss-cross from port to starboard in the cockpit... presumably to ensure the frame was centered on the cockpit's centerline. Very clever. 😎

Hello Barry,

That all sounds exciting. Your Dropbox link requires a log in so I could not view the pics.

I made an enclosure with 30 gauge pressed/polished product and found it quite stiff when trying to roll up the panel. Have you handled the 40 ga product? I'd encourage you to double check the managability of the panels when it comes to rolling them up, etc before committing to the heavy stuff.

A few more things I observed/discovered at the factory today...

1) No monkey fur anywhere on the boat... (good). Ranger uses some form of paint for covering the fiber glass interior walls etc. I need to find out what type/brand it is as I'm sure it will get marked and scuffed over time.

2) The sliding helm seat's travel is a lot more than I first noted. It travels close to 7 inches.

3) When folding the helm seat and down against the control sideboard I noted the chrome pole holder underneath the seat collides with the fiber glass sideboard. Andrew was on hand and some form of rubber stop will be installed to avoid this issue to avoid eventual dents/scuffs/hole etc.

4) The rudder has a fairly large oblong hole in it ! It's aligned with the center line of the prop shaft. What's its purpose I wonder ? Cavitation issue maybe ???? Causes turbulence and reduces drag maybe ???

5) The trailer length per my tape measure topped out at 31 feet. This is from the ball tongue to the rear of the swim step. That's an extra 10 feet over the R-21EC's 21 feet. 😉

6) The well engineered shiny I-beam trailer has plenty of walkway along the I-beams to facilitate pushing/pulling/handling the boat's bow at the launch ramp. I have some anti-slip rubber matts with strong peel-off backing adhesive ready to apply to this I-beam surface on both sides of the bow to make things a bit safer. 🙂

7) I'm unsure how much the bow rises when under power at 3000 rpm, but I would say from my R-25's experience that the forward visibility on the R-21EC is superior to the R-25's.

8) I placed my State registration decals on the rear windows of the pilot house low down in the rear corners. They actually align nicely at the aft ends of the boat's States registration numbers on the sides of the Pilot House. I purposely chose this place as I'm not a fan of applying these nasty sticky things on the fiber glass surfaces. On the Pilot House glass I can easily remove them each year with a nice pristine safety razor blade, which was my method on the R-25.

9) There was an R-21EC hull (in the raw and in Ranger gray) outside the factory and I was able to get some additional photos of fittings that I could not get with my R-21EC earlier. I'm fond of taking photos of the boat assembly that reveals things that eventually get hidden during final assembly. There was also another Ranger gray hull for an R-27 with a white boot line as apposed to the typical cream boot line. Someone must have made a special request for that.

The hole in the rudder is to pull the prop shaft through if you needed to remove it. That way you need not remove the rudder before removing the propeller shaft.

Excellent info.... even Andrew was stumped when I asked him about that.

[EDIT] BTW... I'm working on the Dropbox password requirement ... it's a pesky thing IMO.

Hmmmm, I sent the Dropbox link to my wife who does not have a Dropbox account. It did ask for her to login or create an account. I told to her to just cancel that request and the photo album was viewable. Dave, Is this what you encountered ?

I've placed the photos in my Tugnuts Photo Alum at http://www.tugnuts.com/gallery2.php?g2_itemId=42039

Not going to bother with Dropbox.

Let me know if you can view the photos. I quickly placed them without captions. 🙂

Hello Barry,

That's very weird...now when I click your link it opens up your picture album. The top looks nice. That looks like a hybrid between the old style surrey top and the folding bimini top. Your top is not meant to fold down, correct? Certainly the canvas is removable. But the frame isn't meant for frequent breakdown, right?

It's an improvement over the 8 uprights on the surrey top for sure. I like it!

dave

Dave:

1) Top does not fold down. If I want it down I unattached it and stow it.

2) The frame is made to be permanent, and I would hesitate to disassemble it for fear of not being able to install it again correctly. The two King Marine workers went to a lot of pain and care to get the tubular frame in place correctly/precisely before attempting to hang the canvas. Leaving the frame in place should not be a problem for trailering.

3) Yes, it's a new style from King Marine. It does have a total of 4 vertical poles and are sufficiently spaced to not interfere with a swinging/thrashing fish pole for example or retrieving crab pots. They are also a useful safety thing for passengers to grab hold of when boat is rocking and rolling as they move back and forth between cockpit and Pilot House.

Dave: I'll check the flexibility of the 40 ga tomorrow when the boat is delivered. 🙂 I'm guessing I'll have to live with it no matter whether it's less flexible than I want it to be. Thanks for alerting me to this. 🙂

It's been interesting to follow the build of your 21 and have noted all you've had done. Congratulations! Just hope you'll be able to enjoy the simplicity of the boat. That, to me, is what the 21's all about… Smooth seas to you.

Thanks for the various subjects you've posted along-the-way. If of interest to you, the side windows will slide 2" further rearward if you remove the fixed window gaskets (they just pull out/push in), cut off 4" and re-install equally top and bottom.
