After spending last evening on the hook in Eagle Harbor, I brought Karma across to the locks at 5:30 this morning. Early morning cruising is an incredible experience. All is quiet. Normally the seas are calm. The sun will be just turning the eastern sky pink and lavender. More than likely it will be just you and some fishermen....
The crossing from Eagle Harbor to the locks was uneventful. Just one ferry and one tug and tow. Locking through single handed was not an issue as they put me into the small locks where you simply place your lines over a "button" on the floating wall. No adjustments needed on the ride up (or down).
Once I cleared the locks, I went in search of a local pump out station as Stimson's does not have one. I located one at Fishermen's Terminal. After taking care of that beautiful task bright and early, it was off to the fuel dock to fill the tanks. We had not filled them since leaving Bellingham on the 26th of August. We ran for a total of 43 hours burning 114 gallons of fuel. Average GPH was 2.65.
Karma is now secure in her winter home on the Ship Canal just above the locks. I think I felt her shiver when she got her first taste of that sweet fresh water since leaving Lake Shasta in June. We will be berthed at Stimson's Marina until spring. From there we will either take her to Des Moines City Marine (#75 on the waitlist for a 32' slip) or Campbell River Harbor in BC. Our thought is to get her closer to Desolation and the Broughton's for summer cruising. We currently have guest moorage reserved at Campbell River for July and August. I was amazed at the cost. $212.00 per month including tax and electricity!
Aside from a cruise to the San Juan's during the holidays and a possible cruise to Princess Louisa Inlet in mid to late January, we plan to cruise the sweet fresh waters of the lakes and occasionally drop through the locks into the sound.
