KIDDE Fire Extinguisher Recall

Hmmmm.... 😱

Things are getting out of hand for this KIDDE recall.

I've already received my 4 replacement units and today another 4 arrived, for a total of EIGHT fire extinguishers.

What to do with these extras ? Maybe I can use them around the house as I'm tempted to not call KIDDE or dispose of them in some way.

Are others receiving extras I wonder ?

Preemptive strike for the next recall? JK

At this point, I've received just the 4 that were to be replaced.

I had 2 on the recall list. Both replacements arrived in the same box within a few weeks, return weighbill included. I'll likely be dropping them off at the Purolator depot; not sure if they will pick them up as I live out of town.
The old ones just came with the boat and were still new in the box. I haven't checked yet if the mounts are the same, but I'm glad I didn't make holes in the boat yet to mount the old ones.

I believe they just updated the plastic handles. Mine came with new mounts (same as old mounts) which was nice as one of my old mounts had broken. =)

Close to 8 weeks now and the replacements have not shipped. Today after my second call to the customer support number a representative will call me within 3 business days.

Brian, I had 3 Kidde extinguishers recalled....one small one a two larger ones. The small one came in 4 weeks and the two larger ones came in 7 weeks and arrived a few days before Christmas. I don't know if this helps you or not, based on what size yours are. My guess is they are starting to become back logged.

I had 4 in the recall; received two at once, then the other two a couple days later. Called FedEx to pick up the old ones - I think they were overwhelmed with the number of pick ups right around Christmas. No fault of Kidde, it took 3 scheduled pick ups to get FedEx to actually come for them.

Got my 3 Tuesday, replaced and shipped old out today. New ones are all metal.

December 8th Kidde emailed:

"Thank you for participating in Kidde’s fire extinguisher replacement program. Customer safety is our priority and we are pleased by the strong response to our recall announcement. However, due to high demand the most comparable replacement for your unit is backordered.

We regret any inconvenience this has caused and are working diligently to fulfill your order as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your patience."

That is regarding the two replacements requested on Nov. 3, 2017. They haven't arrived yet.

We received the first two of three after about 7 weeks. Return PU was easy - a phone call to fedex and put the box outside the front door. Third unit is with FedEx and should be delivered next week - 9 weeks after filling out the online recall form.
It’s slow but it is happening!

On December 30th I went to the Kidde on-line site and filled it out for the two extinguishers in the boat (2015) and the one in the truck(2013). The on-line site told me that the two extinguishers in the house and garage ( which were older models) were not subject to the recall. On January 8th I had three new extinguishers on my front porch with pre-paid mailing labels to send the recalled units back to them. They must have worked through the back log (at least on the white M110 units) because that is remarkably fast service. The new units have completely redesigned trigger mechanisms that are no longer all plastic.

I called the Kidde Recall hotline the other day with a question about any deadline we might have to be concerned about. I was told the recall has NO deadline for submitting a request for replacement fire extinguishers. I was concerned about this, as others may be, because of not knowing when new ones would arrive and being in position to send the old ones back. This will benefit those that are on the move with there boat vs being at at home for a extended period of time.

The new units come with new mounting brackets but they are identical to the old brackets so you don't need to do anything to remount them, just put them in the old brackets and 30 seconds later you are done.

I note that the new units have a very slightly smaller diameter and this means they are so much easier to clip into the previous brackets. 😀 I always found clipping the old units using the capture plastic locking strap a PITA.

As an aside I took my old units in their boxes as instructed to my local FedEx store and they refused to take them as they've been told they don't have the proper safety precautions for handling explosive devices. They said they MUST be picked up by a qualified FedEx lorry/vehical from one's house or some other pickup location. My trip to the local FedEx store was a wasted trip... so will have to follow the return instructions PRECISELY.

Baz,
Are you married?
If so, you should know that by now.

Yes..... and when anything goes wrong it’s always my doing.
