Lisa and I recently returned from Canada's spectacular North Channel, where we cruised, anchored in the wilderness, saw wild life and met up with boating friends. We'll be making several posts over the next couple of weeks and invite you to take a look into the world of this fresh water paradise beginning with these first two postings.....the best is yet to come so check back from time to time and before you know it you'll be wanting to tow your Ranger Tug and or Cutwater to Ontario Canada next summer. Cool... it sure looked shallow at times. Is the bridge hight going through/into Torch Lake a constant (thinking tides etc) ?
 
Hi Barry:

Torch Lake is an beautiful inland lake, often rated in the top 10 in the world, we cruised before heading to the North Channel. The water is a constant (no tide) with the exception of snow fall however they control all that by a dam that leads into Lake Michigan about 20 miles away. More North Channel photo's coming soon, thanks for taking a look.

I see that BoatUS trailer magazine has a nice cover shot of Kismet, looks nice out there in the badlands, so to speak
 
We have not seen the magazine cover yet but the photo was taken last Sept in Zion National Park, Utah on our way to cruise Lake Powell.thanks for letting us know the magazine is out now.

I agree. It is a great shot with the contrasts of Kismet's reds with the red rocks of Arizona. My compliments to the photographer.

I really enjoy following your trail... the photos are very interesting and the blog descriptions add to the photo shoots immensely.

What I would also find useful in following your trips is knowing exactly where you are geographically when a photo is taken or your blog refers to some location... I'm thinking of a map you provide that I could use to zoom in and explore the area you are traveling in and around. This is just a thought... 🙂

We don't have a trailer as at this time there's much remaining for us to see and explore in our PNW area. However, your trips & blogs are convincing me that after exploring the PNW trailering our boat around the USA & Canada would be a tremendous extension to our boating experience. It seems with the boat on a trailer and launching it into waters, rivers, inlets and canals around the country a whole new world is opened up -- and of course meeting new people who also share the boating dreams is a real bonus. Of course, I would have to rent a suitable trailing truck and a trailer to do this.

As you spend a great deal of time away from your 'home base' how do you stay in touch with Mail and personal communications as surely you will be in areas where there's no Cell or Internet coverage... maybe you have a Satellite capable phone... 😉

Barry thanks for your nice comments about our cruising blog, Lisa does about 90% of the work, she deserves the credit.

Let me answer your questions.....a map one could click onto to research an area from where photo's are taken is a good idea and if it could be found and used automatically I think it would be of interest. With that said it would need to be automatic as we (Lisa) has a hard time already keeping the blog current. As an example she is just finishing up the North Channel and we are down on the Tennessee River so more work and less playing around on our boat is not the answer. We'll keep a look out for such a technology tool.

When we travel away from home for an extended period we simply have one of our sons collect our mail and send it to us every three weeks or so. We pay almost all bills online and typically have Internet coverage. At the most we've only been out of Internet and or cell range no more then a week and I can live with that. By the way our blogs make it seem like we're away from home more then we actually are. After our three week cruise on the Tennessee River the boat goes into winter storage for 6 months while we spend time at home......but we'll see you next summer when we tow Kismet out to the PNW for three months.

I'm not sure what the software is behind Apple's iPhoto that provides a map and location where a photo is taken such as I show below. I took the photo with my Apple iPhone 4S camera. Of course, the camera has to have 'location services' for this to be accomplished. Maybe something like this could be employed... Maybe chat with Bruce Moore as he may have more insights on how this can be made to work for you blog.

Note where the red drop pin is that identifies where the photo was taken. In this case I took a picture of my R25's battery compartment at my Edmonds Marina.

To answer your question on mail there is another option, which we use. We use St. Brendan’s Isle which is located in Green Cove Springs, FL. This is our legal/official address and is not considered a P.O Box. This enables us to receive items such as driver’s license renewals and plate registrations that are not allowed to go to P.O. boxes. Besides having them send us hard copy of the mail wherever we are, we can also have the mail opened and scanned so we can see something important immediately. The best thing is they discard all junk mail!!!

1) If I may ask.. How much does the St.Brendan's Isle service cost per year or per month ?

2) How do they decide if Mail is "junk" ?

3) Scanning paper work is a very labour intensive procedure and must presumably add significant cost to the service. Is this an optional add-on service St. Brendan's Isle offers ?

4) How are parcels handled ?

One of my concerns if leaving my home for extended periods would be its safety from unwanted guests etc. Even with a security system in place that calls-in to a security center who do they call to ensure the security alarm isn't bogus ? One could ask neighbors to keep an eye on things but that's quite an imposition if one is gone for extended periods. I'm sure this isn't a new issue and many people have solved this issue for themselves so I wonder how they've gone about securing their home from unwanted guests. Then of course there's the issue of keeping the house grounds in good order, checking for water leaks in and outside the home and the overall cost of having all of this taken care of. One could rent out the home on a monthly basis might be one option I suppose.

Jim... sorry if I'm hi-jacking your thread... but this question is related to extended travels away from home as you've embarked on.

Although we have not used St Brendan's Isle for mail service however many many many MTOA and AGLCA members have and do. These are two groups of cruisers, one (AGLCA) being folks who are gone from home for at least 10 to 12 months and MTOA members who migrate up and down the east coast every year and those that use it always praise the service. If there had ever been a problem I'm sure I and everyone else would have read about it on the respective boat club forums. It is my understanding this organization is top flight. For specific questions you may be best served by googling their web sight and or calling them. Hope this helps.
