For those cruising up to BC Canada's Broughton Islands this summer, already there or planning on a trip in the future we wanted to share the blog posts we've made from our 2016 summer cruise. Lots of photo's from secluded anchorages, bear sightings and the unique marina's that comprise the Broughton Islands. We hope you find the information helpful or insightful about one of our favorite cruising grounds.

Jim & Lisa: Do you also post videos of your cruising adventures..... ? Nice writeup BTW..... 🙂

Hi Barry:

We have posted a few videos but we plan to be more diligent going forward. We bought a drone, with a camera, for taking stills and movie's when we are cruising. Learning how to operate it now, more later.

Ha..... we are in the drone era for sure.

As an aside talking about drones.... You will note that some new photos were placed in the new 2018 R-27 "Build your boat" section of the RT web site. One in particular is an Aerial shot of the new 2018 R-27. This was taken with a drone while Andrew was whizzing around in the factories R-27 prototype 1. The drone operator had to insist Andrew slow down as the drone could not keep up with him. The solution was to allow the drone to get a 'head start' and then for Andrew to proceed and catch up to be underneath the drone.

What model drone did you procure ? If you use it while cruising or maybe while anchored what method will you be using to retrieve it ? I've watched a few sailing gig videos on Youtube which have employed a drone for video shots and watch carefully to see how they actually retrieve the drone. On one such video a lady was standing on the sailboat with both her hands outstretched and was able to arrest/catch the drone by its legs. The drone operator has to be well trained presumably to perform this recapture method.... So I can just see you both.... with you as the drone operator and Lisa being the drone recapture person. You will need to practice this maneuver (on dry land at first) and maybe can show us doing this when you cruise the PNW this year sometime in your new Hero Red R29S. 😱 😉

Have fun with the drone.

Check out Slowboat Cruise Reports for some outstanding drone photography of anchorages and marinas taken on the recent SE Alaska flotilla cruise. Sam Landsman (Safe Harbor) and his partners Laura Domela & Kevin Morris (Airship) have used drones extensively. There is also a Slowboat article on flying drones from boats. Sam did a seminar at the Seattle Boat Show, and here he writes about his early experience with drones. Cool stuff.

Cheers,

Bruce

Bruce: Thanks for that info, and especial the link/ref to Sam Landsman's "Flying Drones from Boats".

Awesome photos, and I have to assume many were taken from a drone.

Thanks Jim and Lisa:

That's a great resource for trip planning.

We're dreaming of a trip to Glacier Bay via Broughtons, Klemtu and the Spirit Bear, and Haida Gwaii / Gwaii Hanaas maybe in 2018 or 19.

And Thanks Bruce for the slowboat link; another fantastic resource.

Bill:

As you get ready for your Alaska trip, very envious by the way, let us know if you have any Broughton related questions. We are not experts but are always willing to help wit the knowledge we do have.

Bruce:

That was a nice piece about drones. It always good to have a resource for additional information. We're excited to get started taking photo's, when and where appropriate, from the vantage point of an airborne drone.

Just curios, if the factory used drones around the places they usually launch, how did they get around the 5 mile controlled airspace restriction. Also did the pilot get his commercial drone license required to use arial pictures for business purposes. It's beyond me why you need that license to take arial pictures. But I guess it's easy to enforce when publish those pictures and the authorities start asking questions. Seemed to have happened to some posts on Facebook and YouTube

I'm not sure about the factory but would guess Sam has the proper license. As far as we are concerned we do not need a commercial drone license because we are not selling our photo's. One can get around the 5 mile airport restriction by calling any airport within 5 miles of where you intend to fly to get permission....or if one wants I suppose take a chance. We're looking forward to using ours to take photo's at remote anchorages, such as in the Broughtons, San Juan Islands, Lake Powell or the Florida Keys. Wish we'd had it last summer when we saw many bears on shore and were surrounded by BC's natural beauty.

stwendl:

The drone photos of the new 2018 R-27 were taken over Lake Washington and Salmon Bay in and around Ballard just from looking at them. This area is around 6 to 12 miles from the Seattle SeaTac airport. Boeing does take off planes from the south end of Lake Washington but that's not considered an airport.

The only other issue I can think of is related to Sea planes taking off and landing on Lake Washington and Lake Union.

I would think RT had the necessary permission(s).... but of course I dunno for sure.

We are certainly entering a new era with the proliferation of professional and pleasure drones.

The are a bunch of dos and do nots related to the use of drones and types of drones based on their weight such as not flying higher than 400-feet, not buzzing wild life, not flying over public meeting areas and so on.

This ref is the sort of thing some people will need to pay attention to - http://knowbeforeyoufly.org for recreational/business/public drone use.

I'm waiting to see if Amazon decides to employ more and more drones for their product deliveries using the roof tops of all the USA/Canada/UK located 460 Whole Foods grocery store's flat roofs.

Also, I'm curious to know how the various birds will treat drones flying around their territories.... will they attack the drone(s) ?

We are entering an interesting drone era for sure.
