Maybe my excuse is my body isn't that young anymore or maybe I'm seeing a problem where there is none, but I can see some rough water days when we might want to go safely up an out of the forward hatch instead of swing out and about. Our boat is the R31S and it is a real stretch to say I'm going to be able to exit up and out that way. Is there anyone who has thought of a neat ladder, with storage, to resolve my anxiety....and my wife's anxiety as we haven't done chinups in many years. Thanks.

We keep a small step stool on the boat that can be placed on the v-berth bed in our R27. Using it we can get get out through the hatch if necessary.

I have made a ladder and also have a kitchen stool, the homemade ladder works best as it goes up thru the hatch so you can almost climb all the way out the hatch, the stool still requires more skill and horsepower, up butt high to sit on the hatch seal and swing legs on deck, then figure out how to stand up if somewhat ancient or limberless (new word)...Yes, we prefer to go forward through the hatch...Rhonda is small and nimble but I am weight, size and physically challenged, still strong but 230 pounds can only be thoughtfully maneuvered through the forward hatch...the long small thin ladder works best for me...

1 x1 1/4 inch Al rectangle tubing

74'' tall

13'' outside width

17" base top and bottom

rungs are 11 3/4 inch spaced

store during no sleep or cruise on berth when using berth on the galley table

I had a ladder installed on my R25 classic. My entire family loves it, and we use it every time we go out.

Many kudos to the talented folks at Winter Island Yacht Yard for their handiwork.

I just uploaded photos to my gallery/album: gallery2.php?g2_itemId=71908

If I did it again, my only recommendation would be to re-think the catch system that keeps the ladder stowed... I've bitten a finger on the plastic clasp and it is hard to undo under load.

Check out my album.

Looks interesting. Did you bolt through the deck?
