I have read all the topic posts on making the bed softer by adding Yachtbedding’s 2” topper. It comes in both Latex and Memory Foam. I can’t decide which of the two types to get and would like to hear fellow boaters experience with either type from Yachtbedding. Thank you.

Get the latex. That is what we have. As far as I can tell memory foam is a gimmick. You do not want a memory hole formed that you fall back into when you try to roll over. Also very hard to get out of.

OMG, I’m going to disagree with Curt! I think the choice between latex and memory foam depends on a couple of factors.
1. Latex is open cell while memory foam is typically closed cell. This means memory foam is “hotter sleeping” than latex. If you prefer a warmer bed without multiple blankets go memory foam. If you are a warm body and don’t need the extra heat stored in the mattress go with latex.
2. If you are a side sleeper or back sleeper many recommend to go with memory foam. I’m a side sleeper and find memory foam to be exponentially more comfortable than a latex mattress for a long nights sleep. If you are a stomach sleeper definitely go with latex.
3. Latex mattresses are more bouncy than memory foam. Great for when you are feeling frisky! Memory foam moves slower with less bounce.
4. Memory foam toppers can be ordered in any number of firmness - from a rock hard to really soft. Latex doesn’t give you all that range. In general memory high density firmer foams tend to last longer than softer memory foams.
5. If you toss and turn a lot at night and don’t want to disturb your partner memory foam isolates motion transfer better than latex.
Vicki and I have found our 3” medium density memory foam mattress in Our Journey’s v-berth provides the best sleep we have ever had on any bed anywhere ever!

I actually agree with many of Al’s comments. I think I just fit in the other half of the spectrum.

1. I prefer a cool bed.
2. Can’t sleep on my back because of back issues and need to be able to roll often without so much effort. A really firm mattress allows me to sleep on my stomach at least part of the night which I can’t do on a memory foam. Not enough support. I sink to the bottom.
3. Bounce is not an issue with only a 2” topper. It only provides a bit of cushion above the super firm factory cushions below. No bounce with 2”.
4. The latex mattress from Yacht bedding does seem durable. Fully stitched through with tough corded perimeter.
5. No bounce with 2” latex topper. 3” may be too much though. I would hit my head while propped up for reading with 3” in the R27 Classic.

I would suggest you try each in some way if possible before deciding. We slept on a memory foam at a relative’s house once and that made the decision for us. Never again! Way too warm and soft with a trapped feeling for me. Albeit it was on top of a softer mattress than the cushions on our boat and probably thicker than 3 inches. Maybe a firmer memory foam would be different.

We spent 70 straight nights aboard our boat this spring/summer on our Alaska trip and slept like logs every night. Could not have done it without some sort of topper. Don’t know for sure how well a memory foam topper would have worked but 2” latex worked for us perfectly. Now if I could just get used to the too soft bed at home without waking up so sore!

Good luck in your selection!

I read the reports on Yachtbedding with interest as well. It seemed a lot of money to invest in an unknown. In addition I wanted to be able to access all the storage under the berth. Initially as a trial I took the existing V berth cushions to a foam shop in Victoria BC. They made a 2 inch custom topper in latex in three pieces, two sides and a single centre piece. We chose zip on covering and to stop the pieces moving when in place they have Velcro “flaps” down each side of the centre piece. This topper has been a huge success, really improving comfort. Access to the storage is easy. The topper goes on top of the covers my wife made and are shown in our album. I can post pictures of the topper if there’s any interest. We just use a normal sheet and tuck excess at the sides. Cost was about $450 CDN. That’s about $340 USD. Quite a saving.

We did something similar to Chimo. However, I bought a 2 inch king memory foam and then cut a topper piece for each cushion and then made a fitted flannel sheet for each topper. The sheets are easy to remove for washing and access to storage is easy. We can also leave the rear center cushion out and this makes for easy access to the v-berth and to be able to stand in the v-berth area to change clothing without having to be in the companion way.

Chimo found a really interesting option. That said, although expensive, you won't go wrong in terms of sleeping comfort with what you get from Yachtbedding. Shannon does a first class job. We had the latex topper on our R-27 and now have one on our R-31. Can't say enough good things about it. Yes, it is heavy. And yes, it is makes it less easy to quickly get in and out of the underneath storage areas. But we sleep-oh-so-comfortably-and-well. And that is what we notice most.

Shannon ought to be able to give you good advice on memory foam versus latex. We have a latex mattress at home as well, and it came with four layers in three firmnesses (you adjust the order of the layers to achieve a personalized comfort firmness). Shannon can tell you if she offers firmness options on the latex.

Bottom line: a topper of some kind tends to be a huge improvement to the comfort of the factory bed. Yachtbedding is one excellent (but again expensive) source. There are others, and sometimes some very good local ones.

Good luck!

I would with out question recommend the Latex topper. We made a 2” topper for our C30S and it is wonderful to sleep on.
I chose to make our own by ordering the 2” sheet of latex in a king size. We made a pattern with paper and then cut the latex with an electric knife. We then used spray fabric glue and glued a king size fleece blanket to both sides. We cut the king blanket the same pattern as the latex with about an extra 3” on all sides.

All in it took about 2 hours and the total cost was under 200 dollars.

We have slept on the bed over 40 nights and it’s extreme comfortable.
If you want more details let us know and we can send pics and the vendor we ordered the latex from

Good luck

This is exactly what we have on our R-27 and it works great.

Another vote for latex versus memory foam. We cut a 2" latex topper for our boat and it's a huge improvement. At home we have a hybrid mattress which includes memory foam with cooling beads. There's nothing cool about that mattress. Comfortable, but especially hot in the summer.

Thanks to everyone. Great replies, just what I was looking for. I live in S. California where the weather is usually mild even at night. So leaning towards latex for that reason. Before I decide, a quick stop at a mattress store may be a good idea to test what a memory foam feels like. Thanks again for all the good advice between the two types.
