I recently changed all lighting on my R27 to LED. The previous owner had already changed some and I finished the job.

I used products from Marinebeam. They have products specifically made for Ranger Tugs:

Their products are pricy, but are designed to mitigate LED RF interference in VHF radio communication and AIS operation about which the USCG recently published a warning.

Last night, I discovered that Marinebeam products truly are better.

I was working on a project in the cabin that started during day and went into the night. Some of the time, I had the TV on. Reception was just fine during the day, but after dark, the screen started to pixelate and dreaded blue screen with “No Signal” would display on the station I had been watching all day. For cabin lighting, I was using the salon lights over the table and sink. As an experiment, I turned them off and the TV reception returned to normal. I repeated those actions. Lights on, TV reception gone. Lights off, TV normal.

On my boat, the salon lights have two sockets. The previous owner had changed the salon lights to LED, but elected to put an LED bulb only in one socket, leaving the other empty. When I changed the rest of the boat lighting to LED, I put a Marinebeam bulb in the empty socket and left the existing LED in place. That bulb was not a Marinebeam product.

I removed the non-Marinebeam bulbs from the lights and TV reception was the same salon lights or off.

So if you’re having TV reception issues at night, it’s possible you’re experiencing LED RF interference.
