Just noticed my stbd running light doesn't work when I trailer my boat at night! Can't seem to find any troubleshooting or parts replacement described anywhere! Has anyone else dealt with this?

Hi Roger,

This happened to me on my 2006 R21 Classic. These lights are LED's so the likelihood of a failure of the light itself is slim. The first place I would check is the plug and socket on the bow of the boat where you connect the power from the trailer. There are four pins on the plug and four matching recepticles on the socket. Use a Scotch Brite pad or piece of steel wool and carefully clean all of the pins on the plug. Then find a suitably sized steel probe to carefully insert into the four recepticles on the socket, a small drill bit will suffice. Carefully work the probe in and out and around the inside of each recepticle cleaning the contact surface inside. After everything is clean apply some dielectric grease to the pins and recepticles of the socket then attach the plug from the trailer and check the lights. You should be good to go. If not, let us know as there are a few more difficult to solve issues that may be causing the problem.

I had to replace both my port, stbd and one stern light recently as each one had a diode that was not working.

They are courtesy lights made by Innovative Lighting.

Okay, so I had a little time and went out to explore the situation! Plug had accumulated some spider web goo and I set out to clean them by hand (no contact cleaner) Walked around the boat to investigate; right running light still doesn't work! Set the left side on to verify, left still works but on continuing my walk around, found right led also flashes with the left signal on! Now realize that I'm not sure if these are supposed to flash individually or together.(alongside on the highway either way would provide some warning of intent to change lanes) Though I admit to being confused. Also note that two LEDs aft are not illuminated; assume these come on only with brakes or backing?? Sure would like to know how this Christmas tree is supposed to work...! :?

Hello - I had same issue just two weeks ago. To boat to Reed Marine in SE Michigan. I believe it was a ground issue of some sort. Contact Chuck the mechanic for details on the repair or even Tim Manton the salesman. I picked boat up and it now works. When I invested repair saw some small jumper wires were added in.

Hello Blue,

This sounds like a GROUND problem. Ensure the trailer is fastened to the hitch on the tow vehicle to make sure you've got an adequate ground. There is SUPPOSED to be a ground wire in the harness but sometimes it fails (or was NEVER connected to the chassis of the tow vehicle).

The "tail" LEDs on the 21EC are BRAKE and TURN signals. The side lights are CLEARANCE lights (they are ON with the tow vehicle's parking or driving lights).

I know I sound like a broken record but you NEED a VOM so YOU can test your harness going to the boat. Although I know I shouldn't do this, I'm presuming your trailer lights are functioning normally...? If YES, then, using your VOM probe each pin in the harness plug going to the boat and determine IF you have any electricity even going to the boat's trailer lights.

This is the type of VOM I'm talking about:

You want a clamp on meter that will read AMPS DC and preferably read the "inrush" amps so you can see how many amps your starter motor, refrigerator, or air conditioner is pulling for instance. Anyway, with a tool like this YOU can figure out what's wrong rather than replacing things that aren't broken, etc..

Let us know what you find,

Did you get this resolved?

I have a couple hours into getting mine to work.

A few things are known for sure. 1) The "bulbs" do go bad. Yes, all four in the same unit. 2) The wiring for the lights is completely separate from the boat wiring. 3) The amber lights on the sides do not flash with the turn signals. 4) You can not access the harness on the side lights. 5) There is a splice on the harness behind the refer that runs over to the left side marker light. 6) You can access the harness for the rear lights above the fuel tank. 7) The rear lights are brake and turn only and do not remain on as running lights.

My boat had the polarity on the left running light reversed at the factory.

What I would do is remove the plug on the bow an energize each circuit. White (ground) and brown should give you both side marker lights. White and yellow should give you the left rear light and white and green should give you the right rear light. Remember LED lights require correct polarity.
