I need to replace the worn Gypsy on my Windless but am uncertain which is the correct one. The parts diagram lists two different gypsies:
Gypsy RC 8mm (5/16)
or
Gypsy RC (5/16) G4
I assume it would be the part with the G4 chain designation but I thought the chain would be stamped G4 which it is not.

Thanks!

Does the chain have any markings?

BBB (Grade 30 - Standard Old Stuff!) chain should be marked either 3, 30, 300, BBB, or 3B
G4 (Grade 40/43) should be marked either 4, 43, 430, HT, G4, HT4

Hopefully you have a G4 designation which is the good stuff.

I can't help you on which gypsy to order, as it is not in my wheelhouse. But since I am in construction, I have a manual on chain sizes and designations sitting on my desk!

I think if you called Lewmar with chain in hand and a tape. Give them exact measurements of the chain, they could tell you.

Plewis,
The chain measurements are included on page 2 of the Lewmar manual. If you have the same chain and gypsy that I do (same as what came from the factory) it is the G4 chain and Gypsy. My chain is marked on the outer flat part of the link. You may need to rub it or clean it to see it. If there is none, just measure the chain dimensions against the table on page 2 of the Lewmar manual. The Gypsy part number is on the inside edge of the Gypsy between the major teeth. You need to lift the chain off and rotate the Gypsy to see it as it is only in one spot.

All,
I recommend buying the Pro-Series Seals and Screw Kit p/n 66000764 (special order from West Marine) and keeping it in your spares. If you ever need to do repairs on the water it is easy to drop one of these small parts, especially the drive pins which are super easy to lose and are the first thing likely to fail.

I was wearing out several Gypsies until my chain guy turned me onto Mantus swivel placed at the anchor. What happens is the chain twists and that twist wears the jaws on the gypsy, hence the chain slippage. I also hade made a bronze roller with a chain grove that keeps the chain links straight for the gypsy .

Thanks to all. As suggested the G4 designation was stamped on the chain, it took a magnifying glass for my old eyeballs recognize it. Also as Curt suggested; the P/N was stamped on the gypsy for further conformation it was the correct gypsy and that the dowel/seal kit is handy to have. In my case the dowels looked pretty tired so I ordered the kit.

I have thought of the chain swivel before because of occasional problems with hockles, the thought it would also reduce gypsy wear is intriguing.
