Line Cutter on a Yamaha Prop?

I have no interest in doing this, nor do I have any plans to do so - but saw an interesting chat on another boating forum.

Has anyone here ever fit a line cutter to an outboard yamaha? In the summertime I feel I could walk from Everett to Hat Island without getting my feet wet stepping from crab buoy to buoy. I mean, it MIGHT be a prudent defensive install?

I wouldn't view it as necessary. One of the big advantages of the outboard over an inboard is that it's easy to deal with a fouled line.

Fishing lines are what normally damage the lower unit seals. I don't really ever see any type of cutters on most outboards, but the Volvo IPS use little cutters under the props that would probably work well on outboards.

Where we boated previously, some decades ago, line cutters were very common. Most larger boats were then inboard and it got to be known that some idiots were intentionally cutting lines just for fun. That's an expensive loss of fishing gear and lousy for trapped crabs. Some folks then used 6ft of HT wire under the float.

I took this picture several years ago, West side of Spieden, shrimp season. The boat's an Oceansport with twin F300's. He anchored himself on his pot, line wrapped around his prop. From his stance on the boat, he wasn't able to get to it and was stuck. I offered to help, but he'd already radio'd one of his buddies to come over on a boat to unwrap the leaded line from around his prop.
