Lithium Marine Batteries

I was wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge of using lithium marine batteries on the Ranger Tug? I know they are expensive but they seem to last 8 to 10 times longer than AGM. They also recharge much faster. Can we order a new RT with Lithium Technology?
 
Hello,

We have never installed lithium batteries in our boats but it all matters what kind of charge these batteries allow. The onboard battery charger and alternator only allow certain charge profiles so we would need to make sure these are acceptable. If the batteries are the same overall dimensions, I don't see any reason we couldn't complete this installation.

I checked out a couple of 100 AH Li-ION batteries on the web and their cost was $1000 to $2000 each. BoatUS and a couple of other websites recommend NOT buying Li-ION batteries until they become more reliable. There have been too many fires and such. One of the Li-ION battery manufactures requires you to buy their charger. I don't think I will be buying any in the near future.
 
This is the exact reason why some research would need to be done. I will do anything I can to stay away from electrical equipment that isn't tried and true. Enough has been said to keep me away from this installation. Now, no more using the "f" word on this forum. 😀
 
As a followup to the Lithium Ion Battery discussion, I found an article that describes the current issues with the battery for use in boats, cars, and airplanes. It boils down to the battery is not ready for installation in boats, cars, and airplanes. And when the battery is ready, you will have to also replace the charger, battery management system, alternator, and voltage regulator. Please read

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The battery pack that comes with the boat works fine. I have liquid cells and they work fine. The only thing I would add is a good monitoring system like the Link system. Between the solar panel, alternator, generator, I'm set for weeks and months on the hook. I wouldn't even go to AGM, the cheapest technology work great, so why change it?

You flooded battery fans can say what you like, but since I went to AGM's, my boat goes faster, better mpg, port side window stopped sticking, I've lost weight, and best of all...a gorgeous, new girl friend! So there.

So Phil how much weight did you lose? I might have to buy some lithium marine batteries. Just need to figure out how many l need to get! :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
Actually,I think it just felt like I was losing weight from carrying the AGMs to the boat. They weigh a ton!
 
Phil, I think my wife might have something to say about getting AGM along with all the benefits :lol:

Have you been eating Lithium batteries? I think all your false impressions from the benefits of AGM batteries may be due to too much lithium!!! Although, you definitely have lost weight because your wallet is much lighter.
Wait until you see what bodily improvements you get from the Airhead toilet! :lol:
