Hi All,

The fourth webinar in our new As the Prop Turns series will take place this Thursday, 4/23/20 at 10:00am PDT using the Zoom platform. This week’s topic will be, Tugnuts on the Loose Q&A Session - A live question and answer session with our Factory Customer Service Team.

Questions will be taken from this post: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=15147 and additional questions will be answered directly from the Zoom Q&A section, so you will have the opportunity to ask questions live during the session.

We anticipate the webinar to be from 30 to 60 minutes long. Each episode will also be available to watch on YouTube after the live broadcast.

Please join for free by registering here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/151585 ... 82lMVB_uvw

Looking forward to chatting Thursday!

About “As the Prop Turns” – A weekly live webinar series each Thursday at 10:00am PDT the Ranger Tugs & Cutwater Boats customer service team will broadcast live to address a variety of topics focused on maintenance and cruising in your Ranger Tug or Cutwater.

About Zoom - You do not have to purchase anything from Zoom or sign up for an account. You only need to register at the link above and follow the instructions in the confirmation email that you receive from Zoom.

My question from the webinar "On the MARPA, will that give you CPA?" The response from the Sam "I am not familiar with the abbreviation CPA. Can you explain?"

CPA mean "Closet Point of Approach" This link explains it better than I could!! https://digitalyacht.net/2014/04/03/cpa ... explained/

But the whole point is: If I know the CPA of a boat should I be concerned or not? This is the info I would like from the radar or AIS.

The CPA for each target is dynamic - your radar/mfd/sensor constantly update your positions and headings. If a specific target's CPA decreases you should alter course and/or speed to maintain a safe crossing or passing distance. If it increases you can maintain your heading - at least relative to that target.

Once your relative position is safe, and you have visually verified this, you should dismiss the target.

Cheers,

Bruce

Yes, the CPA for each target is dynmaic, its moving so it should be. Yes, my radar/GPS/AIS should be updating. I am moving too. Yes, if the target CPA is decreasing I should alter course. Forgive me, that in it self I know.

Lets say I have 3 targets and the could be coming across my bow or coming at me. One 3 miles, one at 4 miles and the other at 5. All doing different speeds to add this. Will the MFD though radar and/or AIS show me each target with a CPA and TCPA so then I can come with a plan? As in, to slow down, speed up, turn to port or starboard or even hail them.

Just to add, my boat is on order so I can't try this out myself. I know Raymaine & Furuno will display this type of info depending on model.

Yes, each target you are tracking will update CPA individually. You have to do the planning.

MARPA and AIS are two separate things. AIS provides similar tracking and warning features, but only if the ship is transmitting an AIS signal. While it helps spot boats/ships that radar can't see, i.e. a freighter about to come around a point of land, a lot of boats won't have AIS transmit capability. MARPA can target and track anything the radar picks up.

Cheers,

Bruce

If you have a Vesper AIS receiver or transceiver, it automatically does the planning and will give you a prioritized list with CPA and time to CPA on your smart phone. This list puts the vessel of greatest concern at the top of the list, not the closest target that may even be moored or anchored. The software is so much better than the Garmin version that I have that I do not pay much attention the AIS info on the Garmin chart plotter. The Vesper unit also has a wifi-to-NEMA2000 interface included.

Yes, I have the Vesper 8000. Great unit!! But I do understand that radar and AIS is two different things in itself. But some MFDs do take that info and combine then is some way. But the questions is not really being answered, Maybe I will call Garmin on this. What I am looking for, is how Garmin handles this info.

On my older Furuno unit, a target would come up on radar. I could take the pointer and click on it. Now it would give me AIS info as in speed, and more. But it would also give me CPA. Again you have 2,3 or 4 target being down on you, this info will give you a bigger picture as to your next move.

I don't know if anyone is interested in this at all. But as to Gamin's MAPRA feature................

VRM and EBL is Garmin's terms and will show CPA (Closed Point of Approach) of a target.) Or at lest calling Garmin, they said "yes". .

From the Manual:

The variable range marker (VRM) and the electronic bearing line
(EBL) measure the distance and bearing from your boat to a
target object. On the Radar screen, the VRM appears as a circle
that is centered on the present location of your boat, and the
EBL appears as a line that begins at the present location of your
boat and intersects the VRM. The point of intersection is the
target of the VRM and the EBL.
Showing and Adjusting the VRM and the EBL
You can adjust the diameter of the VRM and the angle of the
EBL, which moves the intersection point of the VRM and the
EBL. The VRM and the EBL configured for one mode are
applied to all other radar modes.
1 From a radar screen, select Menu > Radar Options > VRM/
EBL.
2 To adjust the VRM/EBL, select the arrows on the VRM/EBL
button.
3 Select a new location for the intersection point of the VRM
and the EBL
4 Select Done
Measuring the Range and Bearing to a Target Object
Before you can adjust the VRM and the EBL, you must show
them on the Radar screen (Showing and Adjusting the VRM and
the EBL, page 36).
1 From a Radar screen, select the target location.
2 Select Measure.
The range and the bearing to the target location appear in the
upper-left corner of the screen.

The echo trails feature enables you to track the movement of
