Location of NMEA backbone and Garmin Compass

For the Ranger tugs 29s, I have read from the forum that the NMEA backbone is behind the refrigerator. Before I yank it out, is that indeed true? Also, where is the Garmin Course Computer Unit or CCU located?

Suggestion: It would be useful if this information was provided in some documentation somewhere, such as in the "basic" manual that is provided. People would not have to bother you or try to reverse engineer the wiring harness themselves.

I would trace the wires back. If most of the wires go behind the fridge, than that would answer your question.

I hope and would not think, thats where it is. Its small enough to go almost anywhere. Keep in mind, that the back bone can be opened up almost anywhere and more tees can be added.

In other words. My backbone starts at the Fusion head unit, goes to the helm where 5 tees are and than to the engine compartment. As to the Garmin compass, I would call them. My heading sensor, turn off the NMEA2k network for 10 seconds than turn it back on. After that, do 3 complete 360 turns.

It may depend on the year of your R29 since there is a huge difference in layout between the classic 29 and the current model.
On our 2012 R29, the NMEA backbone is behind the refrigerator, but it is not difficult to remove the refrigerator then crawl into that space to access it.
Our CCU is behind the lower left galley drawers.

Good morning. On our 2015 29S the backbone is accessed through the cave next to the cabin ac pretty much under the throttle area. You will also notice the garmin autopilot compass doohickey. Do not store tools etc under your helm seat as it may affect that compass.

On our 2009 29 it's mounted to the hull behind a panel in the big locker below the cabinet to access the back of the dash electronics.

Our 2019 29CB is similar to Ethan's 2015. Panel above and to the right of the aft AC return in the cave. It's not an easy access for sure. Physically its aft and below the throttle. I have a t connector I want to add and although I've laid eyes on where it needs to go, I have gotten back down there to do it!

My mistake for not specifying the year. It is indeed true that the "new" 29s are different.

per with ethanbarnett's response (a 2015) I will check in the cave.

I have found in the Garmin documentation that there is a calibration procedure to set the compass correctly. We will try that and see how it goes. My Garmin Compass reported on the MFD was about 10 degrees off. One of the related issues with that was that the radar overlay over the chart was rotated 10 degrees as well. I went under a big bridge the other day and it was an excellent example of the misalignment. I had thought from reading on the forum that I might have to rotate the sphere in the CCU....glad I don't have to do that!
