Fore and aft lines work fine. Bring the fore line back to where you can reach it from the cockpit door. Lock staff will take the line and tie it off for you. IN the seaway lock tenders drop lines fore and aft except on the US locks on the seaway where you pass your line around a tubular bollard which rises and falls with the change in level. Last summer two of use did the Rideau canal (47 locks) and returned via the Seaway - Kingston to Montreal. No problems and the lock staff are very helpful.

Use plenty of fenders - both sides because you may be rafted with another boat if things are busy.
 
Depends on where you are locking through. I see you are in Tennessee. The floating bollards make it easy. without a center cleat have a line extended from bow to the stern. pull up to bollard and open side window. Have mate slacken line and you make one loop on bollard. Have mate tighten line. You are set. Keep a knife handy in case you have to cut the line in case the bollard jams. Here is a Youtube video. Things can change quickly and yo want to be prepared. I have fenders tied off the bow rail and at the stern.

This is at Nickajack Lock in our previous boat, a 19ft Rinker 190, but you can see the two lines wrapped around the floating bollard.

Haven't done this in a tug yet, but the principle is the same.

Somewhere I read that using black lines, fenders and gloves on the wall side is advisable, as they may get greasy remnants from barge tows.
