Hi there,

Can anyone confirm if the stern rails to mount a BBQ are 7/8 or 1" or 1 1/8 or 1 1/4?. There are two different sizes of rail mounts to mount the kettle, one standard and one that fits oversize round rails. Which one fits best? Thanks!

One inch, 1" should be the size you are looking for.

I just bought a new grate for our grill because it tipped and the grate fell off along with dinner. I don't dive. I should have bought a mount other than the one sold by Magma for a little more support.

I will suggest an alternate to you. I bought a Magma Grill mount designed to slide into the fishing rod holders. I took it to a welding shop and had them add an 8" piece of stainless. The end product works very well. it clears the hand rail and can be stored attached to the grill.

Oh man, I would not have been a happy boater! Maybe some kind of tie wire to hold the grills in may help avoid a future mishap.
You may have wanted to throw a fishing line overboard and caught a fish with all that chum overboard!

I have a pair of goggles and a snorkel for when I need to go over the side. I also have a super heavy duty magnet that I can attach to some line in case I need to fish for something metal that fell over the side. It is amazing what accessories one collects over the years as the result of various projects/mishaps.

Magnet, Great idea! Harbor Freight here I come. A "150 lb. Pull Retrieving Magnet" is just $6.99 less the 20% from the coupon that you don't go to Harbor Freight without. I can be BBQing again tomorrow. I don't know why I never thought of a magnet. I tried a grappling hook with no luck. I knew I read this board for some good reason.

You sure that nasty looking grate is stainless? I sure know it's not "stainfree". :?

I'll test the magnet on a boat a few slips down. If it picks up his grate I'll take his grate to my boat. LOL

That is the magnet I have - very strong. Most grates are chrome plated steel. Good luck.

Watch the L stem on the bottom of the round mag BBQ also. It falls out if rotated too far and I can confirm it doesn't float either.
I was the low tide breakfast show the next morning as I took a dive to retrieve it.

My new grate arrived today thanks to a quick shipping seller on ebay. It is indeed very stainless, but currently not stain free as we cooked dinner on it tonight to break it in.

The word is out at the marina that there is a $20.00 bill available for the grate that is about 16' below the new grate currently installed on my BBQ. I'm sure someone will have their zincs serviced and it will be retrieved.

I'm still buying the super magnet and keeping it on the boat somewhere close at hand for use in an emergency. Perhaps I'll store it next to the compass. :?

Now back to the rail size and BBQ mounts for those that started the thread.
