Magma grill

Hello fellow Tugnutters! After sitting in the garage all winter when we mounted the grill on the boat this week and tried to use it, it is only heating up to about the half way point. The propane tank was filled recently so we assume that isn't the issue. Have any of you experienced this and if so, do you have a solution? Wondering if the hose has an obstruction...? Are there ways to "clear" the hose connections?

Anyway, hoping someone out there has some ideas for us to try!

Most likely the jets to your burner are plugged easy to clean or replace if needed. I use a gas welding tip cleaner but a small drill bit will work just be sure not to make the hole bigger than needed! Just use the drill bit by hand to clean out the jet, I wrap the end of the drill bit with tape so it's easier to use.

Also: check the air pick up box by the jets it is the little square box that has a adjustments for air flow it is a great place for spiders and other bugs to build a nest over the winter and mess up a good dinner!

To clean the burn tubes, I removed and wire brush the slots this will clean the grease and other garbage that builds up on them.

I've found that the burners on Magma gas grills last only a few seasons, and when they are fully carbonized even careful drilling doesn't really solve the problem as the build-up is inside as well.

Fortunately, Magma sells replacement burners. I think I purchased my last one for under $50 on Amazon. The install is pretty straightforward, at least on the grills I've owned.

Also check the hole on the regulator is clear, we have a small pick on the boat just for that purpose. Partner in the boat figured that one out thankfully! Only downside of it working right is the grill seems to have two temperatures. Extremely hot (top of the red on the thermometer) when on low, and thermo-nuclear on anything above low...

The valve/regulator on the older Magma grill is gray. The new ones are blue. The gray one is always way too hot a flame to be useful. Make sure yours is blue! Much better temperature control.

Do you use a hose from your boat propane tank to the grill in lieu of the propane bottles? If so, I do as well and had the same issue. I replaced the hose and problem solved. I kept it to see if it needed a cleaning but haven’t looked to see what might be restricting the flow.

I confirmed that this was my issue by hooking up a 1lb propane canister and the grill heated up properly.
