I am looking at options for mounting a Magma kettle grill on a 27OB.

The review(s) of the Marine Kettle® Pow'r GripFish Rod Holder Mount are pretty mixed. The only review on the Magma site is for 1-star.

Does anyone use the Rod Holder Mount with a kettle and like it?
Has anyone mounted a Magma Kettle grill using a down-rigger pad?

If you have mounting suggestions for a Kettle on a 27OB I'd like to hear them.

Thanks in advance.

John

Hi John,
On my last boat I had the rod holder mount. Worked well for a year then couldn't get it to hold and stop rotating in the holder. That was a smaller, faster boat so things took more of a pounding than on my tug. I now use a rail mount on the R29.

Thanks!

Mr. John, For attaching your grill on your Scotty Downrigger pad, I would recommend a low profile swivel, this will allow you to have the grill outboard of the cockpit when in use and can be rotated in board during cruising and docking. Get the adapter plate and mount the bracket for holding the grill to it. You may also want a way to easily remove for cleaning and storage when not in use. With a little back yard engineering a few trips to your local hardware store I'm sure you will be grilling the steaks in no time. Best of luck, and bon appetite! Bob

Bob, thank you. That is my plan but I am surprised that I can find an existing bracket that mounts a kettle's single arm to a down rigger adapter plate.

John, that is where a little backyard engineering will come in! You might need to design a bracket where one end will fit the grill and the other end the adapter plate. A small riser between the two where it could be removed such as two pieces of tubing/pipe where one fits inside the other and a pin holding them together. Your local fabrication shop (check with your local boat dealer to see who they recommend) will have the material and can weld for a professional job. Good luck Bob

Another option is to get the magma grip rod holder mount about $55 , and install a scotty rod holder to the swivel base.

we had a "fish-on" magma kettle mount for a rod holder on a past boat. So I bought a "fish-on" rod holder base, which I will attach to a "scotty downrigger" pad via "some garage antics" so that I can attach to the Factory Scotty downrigger base. This will allow me to use the previous Magma rod holder mount that we had kept with the grill. It will need to be "re-leveled/positioned" for our R27OB downrigger pad "list".

The additional Scotty pads and screws are available, Bass Pro shops, Cabela's, SportCo, etc

Hi Cliff

Thanks very much for your assist and parts list. After some drilling holes and getting 1/4" x 1 1/2 screws work nylon washers here is the beta version. I'll test it with the kettle in the next week or two.

We initially went that way on our R25 SC, but the railing was in the way. Instead, I got a Magma mount that fastens directly to any railing, which is way easier to use and can be installed pretty much anywhere.

Cheers,
