Subject: Maintenance for 2018/2019 R-29S

I'm curious to know what maintenance is required for the Volvo 300 HP D3 engine on the R-29S... plus some other questions.

1) Raw water impeller replacement - is it an easy DIY process ?
2) Typical periodic Volvo required engine maintenance costs ?
3) Where in Seattle/Edmonds area are there qualified Volvo engine technicians ?
4) Is the 5 yr extended Volvo engine warranty cost of some $3,500 really a must have ?
5) Is engine noise level significantly less as the engine is fully outside of the cabin area ?
6) Is an engine oil & filter change an easy DIY process ?
7) Are there some maintenance activities that are best left to a qualified Volvo engine technician, and if so what are they ?
8) If the piston assisting rods for lifting the engine hatch fail can the hatch be opened manually and what effort would be required ?

Thanks.... 🙂

Hi Baz,

I can’t help you at all with the maintenance questions on your R-29 but I can give you a whole hearted recommendation for a Volvo engine repair/mainance facility.

Coastal Marine Engine in Ballard/Fremont are the folks who replaced my D1-30 in Scout because of the engine recall. They were absolutely incredible to work with and have techs throughout the area.

Larry Lougheed is the service manager and Willow is the coordinator. Both of them are great people and will do whatever is needed to help. Their number is (206)784-3703.

Cheers,
Mark
