For some reason both my Majestic TV's no longer pick up any broadcast signal, even in my home port (Port Orchard) where I used to receive strong reception. Usually I wouldn't be too concerned with this issue, but with the NFL season about to get underway, it's suddenly become more of a pressing issue!

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

I assume both TVs share an antenna. Almost certainly the point of failure is from the antenna splitter to the antenna. First thing to check is the splitter. Is the coax connection from the antenna to the splitter good? Is the splitter itself functioning properly? I’m not completely sure how to check the splitter, but they’re usually trouble-free. Maybe another Tugnutter can help. If the splitter and connections there are good, the next most likely place is the coax connection at the antenna. I just did some work on the top of my R27 and found the coax connection at the antenna to be marginal. Installed new, secured it well, and reception is much improved.

You can check resistance of the splitter with a multi-meter but I'm not sure I would bother. I would take the splitter out and connect the Majestic back to the antennae with a 'barrel' connector or 'gender mender' as needed. That takes the splitter out of the circuit.

I think the likely culprit would be at the antennae itself, corrosion possibly. My TV has been cutting out I think I am going to start up there on the signal mast.

That’s a great idea. For the original poster— those barrel connectors can be bought at Lowe’s or HD. At the splitter, remove the coax coming from the outside antenna and install the barrel connector to it. The coax will just screw on. Then take one of the coax cables running to one of the TVs off the splitter and connect it to the other side of the barrel connector. Turn on the TV and see if you have a signal (only one TV will have a signal). If you don’t, it’s almost certainly a problem at the antenna.

Phil,

I am guessing that your R29 Classic is built very similar to my 2014 R31S. I had trouble picking up any broadcast signal with either TV just as you describe. On a trip just a few weeks prior to noticing the reception problem, reception was okay but somewhat degraded. Then shortly afterwards there was no reception. One of the Ranger Tugs factory technicians told me it might be the splitter which he thought was behind the wooden box on the starboard wall just behind the helm seat. This box runs from the counter top to the ceiling and contains several types of wiring.

Not wanting to tear that box apart, I simply removed the coax connector attached to the antenna on the roof to inspect it. What I found was a heavily corroded center electrode in the connector. There was not enough slack to cut the connector off and replace, so I used my knife to scrape the electrode and some sand paper to smooth it up. After re-assembly, TV reception was perfect. I also put lots of dielectric grease in the connector to hopefully avoid such trouble in the future.

To diagnose your problem, you might buy a section of coax and temporarily directly connect it to a TV and run the coax out a window and up to the antenna temporarily replacing the factory installed coax. Or, you could just do what I did to see if that solves the problem.
