My question is how many of the Tugnutters have the Marine Pollution Placards on their R-25's. I know that they are required on vessels greater than 26ft. However even though the R-25 is listed at 25' it is actually closer to 28' with the dive platform and anchor roller. Does this now require the Marpol placards? ( Oil discharge and garbage/plastics)

Read an article about someone who got stopped by CG and didnt have them displayed properly and made me think about the R25 and its overall dimensions. What are the regulations based on? With or with out the additions. We are getting ready to leave the back country and sail into the big world. Really dont need a big fine.....

Perhaps some of our Power Squadron members can input.

found this at www.boatingbasicsonline.com/content/general/3_3.php

A motor boat is measured along its centerline from the outside of the hull aft to the outside of the hull forward. This measurement does not include any attachments such as swim platforms, outboard motors, bow sprits, etc. This measurement is called the length overall (LOA). You may also hear the term length of waterline or load waterline (LWL). This is the length of the boat, parallel to its centerline, at the line where it meets the water.

hope this helps you make a decision

Hi Frank,

As a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, I can tell you that mspaugy is correct in how vessel length is determined. As far as the Coast Guard is concerned the length of the vessel is determined by the manufacturers stated LOA - they will not break out a tape measure to check. This length will be part of the information on your Registration/Documentation paper work that you would be required to provide to any waterway authority who might board your vessel. So if your paperwork states your vessel length at anything less than 26' then you are good to go.

Many marina's, however, charge by the foot for slip fees and, more often than not, they will happily include anything that increases vessel length in that calculation (swim platforms, bow sprits, etc.).

At one marina in Canada, I told the manager our boat was 25 feet. He looked at it and said, "If I put you in a 25 foot slip, how much is going to hang out? That's what we'll be charging you." 😉

Thank You,

That is what I thought but you never know. Better to query than play ignorant.

Where I am in FL all slips are a minimum of 30 foot for the charges anyways. Sometimes on the haul outs I can pull it off but not often.

Cheers

Hey Frank,

I purchased Marpol and oil discharge placards at West Marine. They were cheap and about 3" by 7." I attached tiny pieces of Velcro tape (hook side) maybe 1/4" by 1/4" each to corners and one in the center. They affix nicely to the mouse fur on either side of the dome-like entry in an unobtrusive but very visible way. They won't uglify your beautiful boat. They can be removed instantly, too doing no harm.

To do over I'd have first peeled sticky backing off placards and stick them to thin cardboard as they are flimsy and have curled a bit. Affix the Velcro to the cardboard backing.

Gail and I plan to be in Key Largo on Alto at the Pilot House marina Oct 26th for 8 days. Then the last week of every month thru the winter. I hope we can raft up! Check in with Ed Henn of Bay Ranger who will be wintering on Marathon. Super nice guy with 800 plus hours on his '08 R25. He knows tons of stuff about everything. Hope to see other Tug Nuts in the Keys too.
