I’m replacing the two cable stays on the mast of my 2012 R27. The swaged loops on the upper portion of the cable stays are made directly to the mast itself. See the photo.

I’ve not before dealt with cable stays or any kind of rigging for that matter, but it seems that some sort of connection between the cable stay swaged loop and mast would be better than connecting directly to the mast in case removal of the cable stay is desired.

Anybody have guidance on this?

I added a pair to my R27, used shackles attached to mast and put cables into shackles. Easily removable, when needed.

While I did not replace my stays, they did develop several "fish hooks" (for non sailors, fish hooks are broken strands of wire that protrude above the surface of the wire and will stab any flesh that comes near it 😱 ). I went to West Marine and bought some plastic shroud protectors (measure the diameter of the wire) which are pre slit and fit around the bear wire, cut to length.Works well and prevents the bear wire from scratching the gel coat. Alternatively you may use a sail boat rigger and he/she will do the job to your specifications.

There is a little tool Swageit #2, that is good for staging small cable up to 1/8”. Handy to have in tool box.

If I was to approach this job without changing how the cable is attached, I would gently bend open the thimble and place it through the hole and then run the cable, Clamp the thimble closed and then use a swage tool to secure the loop.
