Maureen and I will be taking Karma on a short cruise on Memorial Day. As of now we are not quite sure where we are heading. We do plan to anchor or hang on a mooring ball at one of the MP's. Right now Blakely Harbor, Oyster Bay, and Blake Island are on the list.

Anyone wishing to join us, please let us know. Once we decide "where" we are going we will let everyone know.

Wow, am I jealous! I would have joined you in a heartbeat! If only our "Poppy's Legacy" were ready! When we take delivery at the end of next month, I will see you guys out there on the Sound! I'll meet up for cruises...that's for sure! How is Blake? Never been. While you're out there, enjoy your new mast and that fabulous hard top!

Harmony,
We would have loved to have had you guys join us on Blake this past weekend. The weather was perfect. With the ultra low tide we were able to hike the beach all away around the island. We saw numerous deer and bald eagles.

After spending this weekend in Vegas, Maureen and I are ready to get back home to the PNW and Karma. I will arrive on Wednesday evening from the Bay Area and Maureen will come in Friday from Vegas.

Our plan is to cruise to either:
Blake Island (either take a slip or tie off on the poles)
Blakey Harbor, Hang on the hook
Liberty Bay (Poulsbo, hang on the hook)
Oyster Bay, Hang on the hook

Anyone wanting to join us is welcome. If you are headed to another location and would like us to join you, let us know. Once we end up where we do, we will post it for anyone interested.

You can also email me at davidbakermdbs@aol.com. This I will be able to get on my Blackberry.

D,

As an FYI, boats were rafted up at Blake Island Saturday night. You may not have a problem Wednesday, though, unless other Memorial Day Weekend earlybirds descend on the place.

I rafted up with friends who were anchored on the west side...saw 2-3 vacant buoys there that might be an option if the marina is full.

I like that; "home to the pacific northwest".... we're in Gig Harbor enjoying a beautiful bay and grilled eating oysters. Wish you were here.

Grilled oysters in Gig Harbor. Now that's tough to beat.

Way to go.

Wellllllll I don't know...... grilled oysters......... I don't think so...... We wish we were there this past weekend also. Very windy, cold, and snow in the mountains surrounding Vegas this past weekend..... Not quite the norm for end of May!

Karma is hanging on the mooring poles in Blake Harbor. We will be here through Monday morning if anyone should care to join us!

Although we are not heading out this weekend, we are planning on checking out Blake Harbor at some point. Any tips for novice anchorers? Mooring Poles? That is a new one to us.
Thanks

Trinity -- It's good hearing from you guys.
I'm not sure if it is Blake or Blakely we are talking about, Blakely Harbor or the harbor at Blake Island. Two different places close together. Very confusing. There are poles on the north side of Blake Island harbor that are sometimes used to tie to. They are OK for lunch stops. For overnight I don't recommend this unless you have a ring made up of fish net floats to act as rollers that allows your line to go up and down with the twelve foot tide. If you go during the week there should be space at the dock. If the marina is crowded, give a shout to the ranger. Sometimes they will direct you to raft with another boat. I prefer the mooring buoys. They are all around the island.
Blakely Harbor on Bainbridge is another possibility. The problem here is that the cable that powers the island runs through the middle of it. There is a sign far in on the north side that points to where the cable enters the water. The cable goes straight to the middle of the bay and turns east in about 35 to 40 feet of water. The trick is to go west of the sign and drop your anchor in 10 to 20 feet depending on the overnight tide. I must admit that I haven't been there for many years and things may have changed. So use my words only as a guide. If you go there, try to picture in your mind that this was once the largest city and port in the territory. San Francisco was built from this little bay. -- Cary

Thanks Cary

Great information - as usual.
We were looking into Blakely Harbor, but the information on Blake Island is great too.
Hope to see you this summer as we cruise through Anacortes. One of our favorite places to stop for pizza and a shower!

Trinity,
The mooring poles were no problem as long as you do not tie the lines tight enough to keep you "suspended" in the middle. We kept them loose enough to give us fore and aft movement of about four feet. I have ordered the "tide tender" rollers that go on you lines that will make it easier however, it still is no problem. Blake Island is a great place to spend a weekend. There is a trail that is about four miles that takes you completely around the island. There is a lawn area where we played Bocce Ball with Bruce and Vickie of Moondance. This evening we moved over to the dock as there was a "prime" space that became available and we could not pass it up. Our next trip out to Blake we are going to pick up a mooring ball. We have done everything else, now for the grand finale!!! I guess you could call it that..... We have gone through Deception, crossed the Straits of Juan de Fuca, been through the large and small locks, and hung on the mooring poles..... not much left.

There are always a number of boats anchored in Blakely Harbor. We will try it on another trip.
