Yvonne and I have extended out stay in Italy until May 28 so we will miss out on this trip but will see you all in Desolation. When you see us "Stout" will be gone and we will have our new 29 "Rocinante." We get Rocinante in mid April when we return to Salt Spring Island from Tucson and are really looking forward to having a bed that does not require a trapeze to get in and out of. Getting too old to try out for Circue du Soleil.

Bob, Since the list needs to "improve", please consider adding Nudibranch to the list. We are excited to attend our first Ranger Tug cruise with all those attending. It will be our first time cruising south into Puget Sound and our first piloting through the locks. Looking forward to meeting eveyone!

Nita and I are looking forward to the Mini Cruise. We have many who have called us saying they have never been through the locks. They are a little nervous about their first trip through. David Baker, who was kind enough to offer, and I will be available to help anyone transverse the locks.

If you enter through the big lock and do not have a boat against the wall to tie up to, you will be required to have two fifty foot lines. If by chance you enter the small locks, you tie to floats that rise and fall with the water level and require only mooring lines. The transition should be very easy as there will be a full contingent of lock attendants available with few boats entering the lake. If you have questions or concerns about the locks, please ask. There will be lots of information as we get closer to the event.

I think this will be a fun event and we are planning many activities and gifts for a drawing.

Regarding the Ballard Locks:
Google or Bing "ballard locks", pick the site with "usace" in the address. Then click on "for boaters" and then scroll down to "helpful info". This is the official word on dealing with the locks. Further down the page under Links are four videos. These are very good if you can make them come up.

In over 50 years of transiting these locks I had never been required to go "on the wall" until the last mini cruise. We are never too old to learn something new. Generally boats waiting to enter don't tie up. They just mill around checking who is ahead of them. If you are told to go into the big lock, the smart thing for a small boat is to wave a larger boat in ahead of you. That way they will be the the one to go "on the wall" and you can tie up to them.

The important thing is to have one person on the bow. It is difficult to hear the commands from inside the boat. The bow person should repeat the commands to both the lock attendent and the skipper. Once the boat is stopped, the skipper can then handle the stern line. The rule is: Relax and have fun.
 
Thanks Cary and Pat, good stuff. I also want to mention if you do tie to the wall in the big lock, have a 12" loop on your 50' lines.

Luncheon at : Ivar's Salmon House, Lock Spot Restaurant, and Chinook's (each offering a $50.00 gift certificate), choice of a bottle of good quality red or white wine, a brass marine clock, and something from West Marine and possibly Fisheries Supply. We are still talking to suppliers and restaurants in the area to see if we can secure additional items.

Ray, Jocelyn and Brenna from Anacortes will be joining us aboard the Nudibranch.

Well, how ironic and a strange coincidence... I'm selling my 24 year old Vermont Castings Resolute Parlor wood stove to people who apparently just docked alongside Nudibranch (a brand new R27 from the sounds of it) in Anacortes. I was chatting to Jeff/Jenny via Cell phone who were on their sailboat and just pulling into and tying up alongside Nudibranch. I had told them I owned a Ranger Tug and Jeff said they were tying up alongside one. I asked Jeff for the boat's name and who would have believed it.... 😀 I feel good that my stove will go to a good home and another boater/sail-boater.

Jeff/Jenny will meet up with me tomorrow afternoon and hopefully take the wood stove off my hands... 🙂

Downtown Ballard is across the waterway from Fisherman's Terminal and we are looking for places to tie up your dingy. The following link is the Ballard Chamber of Commerce for information on what is available on shore. Copy or type in the website below for the Ballard Chamber of Commerce then click on "The Ballard Business Directory" which iwill give you a list of the local businesses.

Just west of Stimsons Marina there is a public dock with a two hour maximum for tieing up. I would not suggest leaving your dinghy here without locking it up as it is a public dock open to all of those that want to wander on it. You could also bring your tug over from Fishermans and tie up. It is big enough to get six to eight tugs secured.

Downtown Ballard is an easy two block walk from this point. There are numerous great restaurants, shops, etc in downtown Ballard. One of our favorites is Hi Life Restaurant.
