We are new to the forum and to Ranger Tugs. Is there a single post, or perhaps a small subset, which details the various model changes (e.g. when did the R21 become the R21EC?) and changes in equipment as models developed over the years?

I know it would take some hours and sweat, but it would be nice to have some information like that available, especially for prospective owners or for owners who might want to make upgrades. The product is quite a bit different, but several car forums I have used have much of that information available and it is mighty handy.

Thanks if you can point me someplace or if some dedicated soul might decide to take on the task.

(Specifically, I would like to know when the R21ECs first appeared. Sneaky how I used that as an example, right?)

I think it was 2006 when the EC appeared , Ill be happy to stand corrected if I am wrong . The hull was widened and the bottom changed for a little more hull speed . The cabin was lengthened to accommodate the galley and the steering was moved to Stbd . Fuel tank was moved to the stern and increased to 18 gallons from 12 gallons , improving range and serviceability. I believe the 3YM 30 became standard in '06/'07 as well .Thrusters and air conditioners appeared in '08 and more standard features were included like spotlight and fridge. At some point in '07/'08 the fabric for the tops went from a coated marine fabric to Toast Sunbrella . In 2010 the pitch and cup of the prop changed [ less pitch] for a little higher RPM operation for the Yanmar 3YM 30.
There is a little history . There is lots more I am sure from both the pre 2006 side and EC era.

Mark,

I discussed this RPM question with both Andrew and Jeff until I tired of the discussion. Their response was the prop I had on my 2009 was the best they found for all around use. I felt my RPM was too low according to the Yanmar manual. They said they'd give me another prop (I assume swap out props)), but I didn't know which way to go, nor how much. Now, I hear there's another standard prop yielding a higher RPM. I guess if I have a warranty claim because of improper engine loading Ranger will support my claim.

This situation is similar to the fuel vent issue on the R21EC. At least, in that case, they sent me most of the parts needed for me to fix my problem. Even though they didn't put the fix on new boats until recently. At least I've heard the new R21ECs have the modified fuel vents.

I guess I'm picky. Most of the folks on the site praise Ranger for their help with problems. I agree that Ranger provides the best factory support, except for the S2 sailboat bunch, that I've seen. But, I can't give them an A for supporting my R21EC.

Companies dont consider running changes warranty . Its what it was at the time it was sold . I have never seen a YM30 problem yet [ not that there has not been one] . I think you will be fine . A good prop shop could easily modify what you have there already if you wanted more RPMs .

abcandjrc,

My wife and I bought a 2006 R-21 Classic last summer with low hours and some great modifications made by the previous owner. Our tug has the 20 hp 3YM20 Yanmar and we have been very happy. The factory support for any questions or issues we may have encountered has been awesome, not that any of those have been beyond any regular service or maintenance issues or questions. Remember, we are second owners, and the factory has treated us as if we bought this vessel new, right from them. How many companies, making any consumer product, are willing to provide that level of service? I can't think of one. Like all products we buy sometimes new designs create new issues that any good company continues to address, and I have seen Ranger as one of those companies. Just as on any other internet forum, here on Tugnuts you will often get realistic and balanced feedback and sometimes you won't. I think if you look closely at the feedback of the majority of Ranger Tug owners you will find that there are very few of us that still would not buy a second or third Ranger Tug, and many of them have. You can definitely include my wife and I in this category as we have our eye on an R-27 at some point in the future.

Eric
