I finally made covers for the openings over the helm. Again, this is one of those modifications that others have made, and have solved in various ways. I played around with ideas that ranged from a hinged door -- as others have done -- to fabric covers. I finally opted for a fabric cover, because it was the easiest to do. I used Phifertex material -- a woven material used usually for shade. I liked the breathability, plus the durability (no real stretch to it), and on an inside application like this, it looks solid. I have a stout sewing machine that handles multiple layers of canvas and other heavy materials, and the tools for setting snaps. With the equipment I had, this was amazingly easy. I should have done it as soon as I got the boat (those openings over the helm have bugged me for 3 years -- they looked so unfinished!). Here's how it came out (click to enlarge):
