Has anyone discovered a molding that will fit along the bottom lip of the swim grid? Ours is already getting chipped up from the tender touching it during choppy seas, when getting on and off the boat.

The bottom lip of the swim grid likely should have been finished with something so the gel coat edge is not exposed the way it is from factory. It is now very sharp in spots and in order to protect it and protect people from slicing their hands open, we want to find some type of rubber molding for it.

I'm sure there are more elegant solutions out there, but a cheap and easy fix would be the split tubing they sell in auto parts stores meant to protect the edges of car doors. It comes in a myriad of colors including clear. A little adhesive and, Voila!

Hello Sheral,

I'm not at the boat right now so I don't know if this idea would 'fit'....the molding that the factory puts around the bottom edge of the motor box might fit the swim step.

Also, a little on the cheesier side, a swim 'noodle' of your favorite color split length-wise and stuck on would protect the edge as well as your gear. Or, some soft pipe insulation (maybe 1/2 or 3/4" dia pipe size?) from Lowes, Home Despot, etc which is already split and some types have adhesive applied so it might stay on better.

Fair winds and no more chipped gel coat,

dave

Thanks for the ideas.

When I was at the boat today, I looked at the molding on the bottom of the engine cowling. I think it would work perfectly.

Now to try and track down a supplier. Does anyone know if Ranger Tugs in Washington would sell some direct to us?

The factory will DEFINITELY sell you the engine box molding. They sold me a suitable length to replace mine when I re-insulated the box on my 21EC.

Awesome. Thanks very much! 😀

You could try Warco Biltrite in Orange California. They are a rubber manufacturer and have some really neat extrusions which may be suitable for the job.
You really want a non marking white neoprene rubber.

Thanks everyone. It was a real exercise in trying to get moldings from the US. A couple of companies didn't want to ship and Ranger never got back to me. So found some rubber molding on line at Acklands-Grainger. It was the same molding I was trying to get in the US. More money but no shipping...

We ended up applying this trim yesterday to the bottom swim grid lip on our R21-EC. Seems to work very well and will help save body parts from being sliced open.
