For the last couple years I have noticed orange spots developing on the monkey fur in the v-berth. There is no moisture around the spots, however there is what looks like excessive adhesive under the spot. I keep the cabin dry and there are no leaks in the areas around the spots. Has anyone had a similar problem and have been able to clean the fur?

Thanks

Yep...I've got the same thing on my 2014 RT 25SC. All around the v berth area. I haven't heard of others with the same problem. Must be another of the 2014 "issues."

Lots and lots of prior threads and posts on this subject.
Here’s just one thread to get you started.

I’m slowly replacing as much of the monkey fur as I can with white perforated vinyl like we have on the inside cabin roof. What’s left we clean as best we can with hydrogen peroxide.

Vicki & Al,

I am not sure why when I searched for monkey fur that the thread did not show up. I guess I need to retake the Search 101 class. Thanks, I will try the H2O2 on my orange spots.

Chris,

I guess it is time to sell or rebuild our RT25SCs. The 5% to 10% cost of the boat for maintenance/repair per year has held true for my RT25SC over the last 6 years.

There is usually enough (salty) moisture in the air to rust the stainless 304 or 18-8 (not to mention non-stainless) even if your boat is "dry". If it is like the discoloration on mine, it is near fasteners and is likely from corrosion.

Unless you keep your cabin evenly to 70+ degrees and run a dehumidifier year round, it is unlikely you will avoid corrosion of fasteners in a marine environment unless they are a higher quality stainless (which almost nobody uses in interior marine construction). I've seen this happen on every boat I've owned.

Especially if it comes out with hydrogen peroxide, and it is rust colored, I'm inclined to think it is rust...

How does one replace the monkey fur? Specifically how do you get the dang stuff off? including glue. Gary

The older RT’s used monkey fur extensively in the cabin and v-berth areas.
In the v-berth the monkey fur was used over over the fiberglass hull areas and on four big plywood panels on the ceilings, the small panel covering the anchor locker and two large vertical panels on the v-berth side of the helm and glove box. Easy to unscrew these panels and then remove the monkey fur from the plywood. It was pretty easy to reupholster the panels with a thin polyethylene foam sheet
(https://www.homedepot.com/p/TrafficMast ... /203956730) glued with 3M spray adhesive. The foam was covered with white perforated marine vinyl like this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YVFQT6Z/re ... 0H8JJGP8ZJ.
I then secured the panels back in place using #6 or #8 stainless screws trimmed with white snap cap covers (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001Q60F2A/re ... 0P1PZ93H0N)
I’m pretty pleased with how it came out. Doesn’t replace all the monkey fur but it’s much cleaner looking and much easier to maintain.

FlyMeAway,

The orange spots are not near any fasteners. What I have found is that there seems to be an excess of adhesive, the monkey fur where the spots are located is actually hard like a glop of glue that has dried. I will try the peroxide and see if that helps. Also, this year has been quite dry due to the extreme cold weather, and I have seen more spots develop. In addition, one of the good things about my boat is the fasteners and stainless railings. If they don't rust on the outside, I would not expect them to rust inside the cabin.

I have this same issue with my 16 25SC although not near as bad as some photo's I've seen. Its just kind of here and there. I don't think its rust. Boat has only been in fresh water never seen any rust. I was thinking about spray painting it. I have a Porshe and watch a couple of those forums. Those guys can and will paint anything and have it come out looking good.
