Motor Mounts Condition (photos)

Hi, I'm considering purchasing a 2011 R27 whose motor mounts are in a rusted condition, but what I don't know is how bad. Is there someone from the Factory who can recommend a course of action? I understand these are only photos so all caveats apply. Are these mounts in the danger zone and be replaced immediately? should be replaced within a year or two? some other course of action. If I do purchase the boat, what might I expect to pay (a range is fine) to have all mounts replaced?

Hello,

Without physically seeing them it is hard to tell exactly how bad or how good they are. Some looks like surface rust but also there seems to be some flaking going on as well. I would take a screw driver and poke them to see if there is soft spots or not, don't poke too hard just in case. Also I will say it would take a lot for you to be able to adjust them for a shaft alignment so replacing them and keeping them protected would be a good idea. Hope this helps.

From the photos it looks like the engine mounting/support brackets are corroded more than the engine rubber mount assemblies. With that being said, corrosion is often not as bad as it looks, meaning sometimes it's just surface corrosion. The rubber on the mounts will deteriorate over time but it would be hard to say what the current condition is. If you decided to replace the mounting assemblies then I would recommend removing the support brackets on the engine and clean them up to remove all corrosion and then coat it with a good coating to help prevent further corrosion. I would then look at a method to prevent water from reaching these brackets and mounts because i don't think that this would be considered "normal" corrosion for a 2011 engine. Just my opinion...

Whatever you do, check the front of the engine for corrosion (or have engine surveyor do it). Even though you have to remove some of the interior panels, it is worth the effort. With the shallow bilge in the Rangers it doesn't take much water to splash up to the engine. I purchased a 2014 R27 with only 180 hours on it and had a timing belt failure that totally ruined the engine. This was caused by salt water getting up into the timing belt cover and corroding parts.
Now, I need a whole new engine unit on a boat I never even had the chance to use. I don't want that to happen to you also.
The cost: $25,000 plus labor and sales tax. Also, a new engine is 6 months out! GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!

I'm not at all familiar with this boat but if water splashing from the bilge can cause this type of corrosion on engine components I wonder if there is some way you could shape and install a "false floor" barrier from a thin flexible material to slip under the engine to keep the splash away from the engine or at least to a minimum.

From what I can see, listen to the surveyor! I am not a mechanic, but it appears that the brackets to which the engine mounts attach to the engine are badly corroded. New brackets DO NOT come with new engine mounts. On my engine mounts, only the feet that attach the mount to the stringer were badly corroded.

After seeing those photos, I would advise you to look for corrosion in other areas within the engine compartment. Those brackets look pretty bad. I think they can be cleaned up, but it will take some time and skill.
