Subject: Moving moorage from Stimson to Port of Edmonds this month

Have decided to move our R-21EC to be closer to home in Edmonds. I've put a hold on U-Dock's U26 covered slip facing the fisherman wharf, and find that there's a Red hulled R-25 (not sure of it's model year but could be maybe a 2008 or 2009 model) on opposite side of U26. The U26 slip is 28' x 12.5' and really is too large for the R-21EC, but that's all they had. I'm on the waiting list for a covered slip on P-Dock that's 28' x 9.5' which is some $70 less per month. 😱 I should have the smaller slip after a few months hopefully.

I will motor up from Stimson's Marina, through the locks and then on up to Edmonds which should take around an hour or so. I had thought of pulling the boat out at 14th street ramp and trailering it up to Edmonds and then have it lifted off the trailer and into the water at the Port of Edmonds. However, choosing a sunny day :lol: here in Seattle and calm seas is more appealing to me. 🙂 Mind you, I do like the rock and rolling in rougher weather and find this more satisfying than doing same in a much larger boat. Being jostled about in the R-21EC is fun for me. 😱 :lol:

When we owned our 2010 R-25 we had it moored at Edmonds for some 6 years and appreciated the security, facilities and cleanliness of the Marina, plus the slips ride the tide levels so that makes it easier to get onto and off the boat regardless of tide levels. At Stimson our R-21EC was quite low from the slips sidewalks and was even worse during winter months as the lake level falls by 2' or 3' and makes the boat even lower from the slip's sidewalk.

So who owns the R-25 opposite slip U26 at the Port of Edmonds ?

I will be bringing our R-21EC up from Stimson's Marina to Port of Edmonds this Saturday. I'll likely be solo so will use the small lock as that will be easier for me. I'll park my car at Edmonds marina and then use Uber or Lyft to get down to Stimson. Thus will have my car to get home after settling into my Edmonds marina U26 slip.

The U26 slip is covered and measures 28.5' x 12.5' which is larger than needed for our R-21EC. However, if and when we trade-in for the R-23 it will be the right size, or we can get on the waiting list to move to the C&D docks to be in good company of the many R-23s, R-25s and R-27s there. I'm keen obtaining a south-west facing slip on the D dock so we can enjoy the late sun in the cockpit during afternoons for late tea events. :lol:

Are any of the RTs on the C&D docks live-aboards ?

Good luck on the move this weekend! In the interest of "Best laid plans....." you are correct that you will probably get to use the small lock, but they can put you in either. To use the large lock, you are supposed to have long lines-but again, if they put a small boat in the large lock you will probably be rafted to others and the long line won't be necessary... just be prepared - especially if single handing...

Yes, I'm ready to alter my plans as necessary.

Mind you, my plan is to purposely wait for the small lock's green light and ignore the one for the big lock. 😉

I've been through the large lock in the past and did have to raft to a huge boat in the process (the large boat crew were very helpful as I recall).... very daunting to be alongside such a large boat, especially in the R-21EC. If you're rafted I believe they let you out of the lock first. 🙂

I plan on having a full flask of hot tea and some ginger snaps to keep my spirits up as I proceed. It will be good to have the real seas to navigate vs. the calm waters of Washington Lake for a change. I personally like a bit of rocking & rolling.... it has never really bothered me and was brought up traveling on a large open fishing boat along the British Channel and around the Isle of Wight. Circumnavigating the Isle of Wight during tide changes was awesome. As the tide/current left the Solent and Southhampton it created huge rolling swells (and I mean HUGE) around the west and east sides of the Isle of Wight. For those not used to those conditions sea sickness became a real issue. For me, it was simply awesome to experience. 😱 🙂 I recall inviting a couple of girl friends along one time and they promptly stayed on the bow leaning over and heaving up all the time. Thank goodness the girl I married later on was not one of them. :lol:
 
Arrived safely at Port of Edmonds today after a comfortable 9 kt cruise (2600 RPM) using the Autopilot heading of 0º, with small chop, hardly any wind but some rip tide just south of Edmonds. Hot tea and ginger snaps were consumed at my leisure... 😉

I tried to intimidate the lock operations to open the small lock by motoring up and down in front of the small lock, but they weren't responding so had to use the big lock that a huge boat was waiting for and was able to raft to a fairly large sail boat without issues.

I was a bit alarmed at the lock personnel as they shouted loudly and angrily at an elderly couple ("WHAT ARE YOU DOING...." ????) on a small sail boat that were having difficulty trying to tie up on the wrong side of the lock. The sail boat's 1st mate (presumably) waved arms and hands in opposition but eventually the boat was rafted securely to another boat behind us. I felt sorry for them both as being shouted at must have been embarrassing for them along with all the onlookers. 🙁

Laxey is now nicely tucked up in slip U26 with a stern in starboard tie to allow my 12' shore power line to connect to the dock's power pedestal. 🙂

Will take Laxey out for another run tomorrow maybe.... now that I'm all fired up for more travels. 😱
 
Good to have you in Edmond's. Saturday we moved from D-dock into F-dock in preparation for upcoming sale & purchase later this month.

So is your D-dock slip available as I would prefer to be on D-dock. What side of D-dock. What was your D-dock slip number ?

The D dock slip was taken. I'm working on buying the boat and would have hoped to have that slip. The U dock slip you have was the only one available in that size when we looked.

Tom: Thanks.... Good luck with the R-25SC purchase/ownership. Yes, I was late in signing up for Edmonds and had no choice but the U-dock. I do have good RT company on U-dock; An R-27 (red hull) opposite me and another R-27 (blue hull) in uncovered slip at base of gate ramp on north side. I'm on the waiting list for D-dock south side. I had my previous R-25 on D-dock for 6 years. Suspect a D-dock south side will not open up until the Sept/Oct timeframe.

I was surprised our old slip was taken so quickly. I think with the smaller slips, there are many owners who dry-dock boats over winter to save costs, and bring them back in the spring. We are on a wait list for a 40' slip, which is about 18 months. 😱
Tom - do you have a slip reserved in Everett?
 
We took a look at Everett but liked Edmonds more even at the higher price. We put our name down on a slip on E dock in Edmonds. They still had a few 30 ft slips but we're out of 28 ft. It sounds like a lot of people put boats in the water over summer and around September they open up again.
