Fellow Tugnutters,

We have owned two RTs--our 2011 classic RT27 and our current 2015 29CB. Both boats have given us so much joy, along with the terrific support from the factory and the Tugnuts website. Lucky us. So glad we called Andrew Custis so many years ago to ask about these boats.

But--and you know where this is going--our needs are expanding. One grandbaby and another one about to appear, plus two dog-size dogs (not those cats masquerading as dogs) makes our beautiful 29CB just too small, especially because we are using it as our condo when visiting our children and their babies.

As noted multiple times, the jump between the 29/31 and the 43 is immense, along with a major increase in cost. So we opted for another brand of boat that is both intermediate in size and intermediate in cost. And yes, we have harangued poor Andrew Custis and Jeff Messmer for years now about building us a boat in the mid to upper 30's. They'll get there I am assured, but not in time for us. So we are under contract for a used boat to take delivery at the end of summer when the owners get back from Alaska.

By all measures our timing is terrible. We have just replaced the inverter/charger, the charged air cooler system, and the stuffing box. And as I said recently on this site, we have had the boat detailed from top to bottom with a ceramic coat by Kevin. It looks brand new, which is heartbreaking. But this terrific move-up boat just fell into our lap two weeks ago, so we jumped. Our bad timing will benefit someone else.

Soon we will post our boat here. Would love to pass it on to a fellow Tugnutter who can appreciate it.

And thanks to all of you for all these years of great advice and entertainment, and hanging out with some of you at the Rendezvous. I hope our old boat, with a new name but the same soul, appears there this September.

So, Jeff not to be to nosey, but can you tell us what big boat you chose?

Jeff,

I would say Annie Time speaks for many of us curious Tugnutters!

Sorry to be so mysterious. I was just trying to be polite and not going "hey everybody look at why I bailed on Ranger Tug!". At least on the first post.

We are buying a boat very familiar to the RT family, since almost half of the new owners are move-ups from a Ranger Tug or Cutwater.

We are under contract for a well-loved 2020 Helmsman 38e. Here is a video of a boat like the one we are getting, although the interior is a bit different as are some of the details.

https://youtu.be/_3oWn4HkBGA

Colors are the same along with most other things. Those who have been on these boats will agree, the interiors are magnificent and spacious, with amazing joinery and all teak. And since this is going to be our waterfront condo in Seattle (with a view of the Space Needle) the interior was important for those innumerable dreary days in the PNW. And a whole lot cheaper than an equivalent waterfront condo in Seattle, that's for sure.

So my dream of owning a pilot house trawler is going to be realized. And our classic RT 27 was the gateway drug.

It helps that we found somebody like Andrew Custis to help guide us. Scott Helker of Waterline Boats is part owner of the company and a wonderful guy to work with.

pm if you want to know more. Will post our RT29CB soon in the for sale section.

Jeff

Jeff,
Congratulations on the move up! NICE looking boat! I’ll bet your R29 CB will sell very fast.
I hope you will check the Tugnuts forum from time to time. You always had insightful and helpful posts.

Jeff,

Nice choice, that will make for very comfortable living on the water in Seattle. Great cruising boat as well. I’m sure you have it north of Seattle in no time at all..

Thanks you all. Yes I will continue to lurk on this site, but I hate it when folks talk about boats other than Ranger Tugs. The good news on this new boat is that other than the Cummins engine and generator, all the systems are the same, including the cranky Webasto heater and ephemeral Garmin nav software. Our two tugs trained us well, so other than the size of this boat (3X the displacement of our RT29CB), the rest should be straightforward.

And Perry and Annie, if our kids up and leave Seattle, I look forward to bringing a boat back to San Francisco on its bottom rather than by trailer. This size boat pulls this off, albeit with weather delays. Should make an ideal Delta party barge.

Now to figure out what our 29CB is worth in this completely nutso boat market. Ugh.

Jeff

Congrats on the new to you boat! The Helmsman is an awesome boat. We found ourselves in the same position. We wanted bigger than 30' but thought we would settle for 30' Cutwater. We could not find one that was used that was in what I considered to be in Bristol condition and didn't want to wait 1 to 2 years to get a new one that I would spend a year fixing small minor issues after receiving it. So we moved on to the large market of fish in the sea. I will never regret owning our Cutwater and will talk about that boat the rest of my life. We had some real good experiences while cruising in it. Good Luck and be safe out there!

Thanks Brian. Frankly, this whole forum depends on your advice. I certainly do. There are a handful of you savants on this site (another is Mike Rizzo my Ranger Tug Muse) and we are all grateful when you weigh in. I certainly pay attention and often have to look up the name of some part I had never heard of. So thanks go to you!

Jeff

Congrats - those helmsmans are nice and right in the middle of the 31 and 43, size and price

let us know how you like it - i almost got one before our 31CB

Enjoy!

Thanks! I am certain we enjoy having some additional space for dogs and grandkids.

And who knows, maybe when RT gets around to filling the gap between the 31 and the 43 we will back in the Ranger Tug fold. You just never know.

Posted our 29CB to the For Sale listing. Feel free to make suggestions on how to improve its appeal.

Jeff: You're not the first to go the way of the Helmsman model. I've noted several RT owners have gone the route...

RT21 -> R25 -> R-27 -> R29 -> Helmsman

It seems to be a common trend for those wanting something a tad more than the R29. The engine access is a dream for sure.

The one thing that bothers me are the steps from cabin to pilot house and then down to fwd stateroom -- both are recipes for falls if passengers are a bit wonky on their feet/legs.

Good luck with your new boat/condo. 🙂

Barry,

The boat progression you indicate is oddly identical to yours, except for the Helmsman... UNLESS this is an announcement of your future plans!

Viewing / boarding a Helmsman at the Anacortes Boat Show several years, I was really impressed with the boat in general, but especially the way the interior was appointed! Very liveable!

Two grandchildren, two dogs, lots of nights as grandparents—we were just following the Ranger Tug creed of “get the smallest boat you can afford”. Again a gentle poke at Ranger Tug to build a mid-30’s boat for people like us! And I know first hand that there are a number of RT owners itching to move up or have made the decision to do so.

So Barry. You’re next. You have never been shy about getting a new boat! Over the past 10+ years I have enjoyed watching you fall in love with/obsess over new designs and boats. You’re due.

Jeff: I emphasize with your situation in regards to 'grandchildren', 'dogs', and 'baby sitting' opportunities.... 🙂 Time is a limited resource for all of us, and making the best use of time can mean making some difficult decisions. Given this, one has to 'fit in' things deemed to be important and not ignored least they become out of reach for ever. Ever since my early 20s I've had a passion for the auto Porsche marque, and this is now what I'm concentrating on.... the Classic Porsche. Just look at this glorious beauty (53 yr old Porsche 912)... that's now in my stable. Things to do, places to see, time ticks on and is running out...

I'm obviously smitten with the Porsche marque as I've won another car auction recently and have a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet 6-speed being trucked to me by end of next week some time. I found a used hard top for it in Dallas, TX hoping its colour matched.... (and it does in Rain Forest Green), and the car was trucked there to have the hard top installed and is now being trucked up to me in Edmonds, WA state. I now need to build and enlarge my garage-less house's stable. 😱 https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B1AGet7EpGSEdAV

BY THE WAY.... Margaux Graphics Designer (Margaux is the lady that does many of the RT's lettering and signage and who always did mine) did the Porsche Lettering and striping on my '69 Porsche 912 Coupe. 😀

Barry,

I am a southern California born and raised motorhead. Raised by a motorhead architect who loved BMWs before it was cool, who also was a very good sailor, which is how I got into boats and ended up with a Ranger Tug. So I completely get your current obsession. And I have driven your car many times (1969 Porsche 912 with the 1.6L engine before they created that heinous dual carb monstrosity) and even helped a friend rebuild that engine.

But....can't fit two dogs and two grandkids in that obsession, that's for sure. Just trying to be pragmatic here.

Thanks for updating us Barry. This explains a lot!

Jeff

Apologies to Bruce. This thread is now off the rails!

Is being a Ranger Tug and Porsche owner "a thing?". I had a 2010 C4S with removable hard top which I never used because I gave my son a ride to band/jazz practice in h/s for 4 years and his guitars and amps went in an out of the back seat almost every day. Let me tell you, lowering the top in 7 degree weather in Chicago area, is not fun. I have a Subaru Crosstrek manaual trans six speed now, which is not exactly the same but at least the cops aren't looking for any excuse to pull me over now.......
