Mud Dauber problem

FYI - We launched our boat in Superior Wisconsin for a 2 day trip and there was no water coming out of the engine. We pulled the boat out and discovered a Mud Dauber or Mason Wasp had plugged the hole with mud. We cleaned out the hardened mud and relaunched the boat. After starting the motor some larva like creatures were expelled from the engine and now things work fine. We had been covering all holes in the boat, including the drain plug, with a piece of waterproof gorilla tape to keep rodents out when its on the trailer at our home (we had a mouse get in last fall). We have now included putting tape over the water port on the outboard. The hazards of living in the northwoods.

I feel your pain. Here in Florida we have grass or straw wasps. They will build a nest in any small opening, like a drain line on your boat. I put painters tape over ever opening as soon as I return home. They are pests but at least they don’t sting.

Get hardware cloth. It is soft screen material. When boating season ends I cut a square and push the cloth into all openings. No critters get in. If you forgot to remove the cloth ,liquids still drain out.
