Subject: My VHF radio suddenly tuned to Channel 1 from being at 16

The other day when out with family for the day I had an incident when my helm Garmin VHF radio that was set at Channel 16 suddenly switched to Channel 1. 😱

I attempted to tune it back to 16 and could not.

As I was driving I had to avoid being distracted by this issue.

A bit later my grandson came up to me and had a bright yellow handheld radio in his hand and was jabbering on about how good it was. I looked at it and it was on Channel 1. Grandson had two of these and was using them to communicate with his sister who was onboard also.

I asked grandson to turn his handheld radio OFF. Having done so, I was able to tune my VHF radio to Channel 16. 😱

What the heck was going on here ??????? 😱 😱 😱

N.B. My grandson's radio was a Motorola TALKABOUT® TWO-WAY RADIO T500/T600 SERIES.

I believe this handheld provides Weather information on channel 1..... and I do recall hearing weather on my helm's VHF radio when trying to change it from channel 1 back to 16.

It sounds like your radio may be in scan mode. It will prioritize channel 16, but will switch to listen to the strongest signal it receives if nothing is on 16. If your grandson was talking on channel 1 on his handheld that would do it.

Is it possible that you bumped the channel selection knob? On my radio you change to the weather channels by pushing the channel knob. If you want to go back to comm channels just push it again.

jagizzi: Hmmmm, was unaware of that..... I will check that feature out. Grandkids were all about and it certainly was possible one of them bumped up against the radio volume knob. Thanks for mentioning this. 🙂
