So with the reversible stern seat on the R-29 S & R29 CB (as well as some of the Cutwater models), there's precious little room to put the boat name on the stern. Are you folks just putting the name on the bow?

If you have a dinghy up on davits on the swim grid you can put the name on the bottom of the dinghy. That is what we did (as well as putting it on the propane box on the R 27 which also had little room).

We have the R29CB. Our name is on the reverseable seat. We used Boat US graphics for the lettering. you can see our name in the photo album under adventres.

I went to the port side of the "Rumble Seat", looks good.

If your boat is state registered the naming is optional and you can put it where you want. If your boat ts documented you must follow the requirements for size and placement.

Thanks Karl,

It does look good! The picture helps put it in perspective.

Hi Todd,

We're going with documented. I tried finding the requirements but so far haven't come up with a good Google yet. We're still waiting on the paperwork so hopefully it'll be dictated there.

Eric,
The BoatUS graphics site has links to documentation lettering guidelines.

Thanks Chris!

It looks like the key requirements are

- Must not be less than four (4) inches in height (all characters).

- Can be on the transom or either side of the vessel.

Our hailing port in Huntington Beach, CA so we may need narrow letters to squeeze this onto the stern seat.

Better check that again. For documented boats, I think placing the name on the side is optional on our small boats but you must have the name and hailing port on stern.

Let me know if I am wrong.

From the Coast Guard official site (Underlined by me):

"The name and hailing port of a recreational vessel must be marked together on some clearly visible exterior part of the hull. All markings may be made by any means and materials that result in durable markings and must be at least four inches in height, made in clearly legible letters of the Latin alphabet or Arabic or Roman numerals. The "hailing port" must include both a place and a State, Territory, or possession of in the United States. The state may be abbreviated."

So, commercial vessels must have the name and hailing port on the stern, but not recreational vessels. Hope this clarifies things.

I can't say for sure, but I don't believe that the CG requirement for documented vessels is that the name and hailing port be on the stern. The requirement is that they be marked together on some clearly visible exterior part of the hull. We have lobster boats in our area with open transoms where the name and hailing port is on the side. I suppose this could be an exception either because they have no transom and/or they are commercial vessels?
