Hi All,
I'm interested to know the best method for netting a salmon with a dinghy on the back (inboard, weaver davits). I've found the swimstep works well if the fish is on the starboard side but trying to net on port I almost tripped getting around the stability pole for the dinghy. Obviously I could take the dinghy off. Do you all net from the cockpit or try to move the fish to starboard or??
Thanks.
Gary

Mr. Gary, The safest place to net a fish is from the cockpit area of your boat! No fish is worth a man overboard drill. You may want to look at a different (longer extended) fishing net if your current one does not easily reach the water from your cockpit area. I will say on my R-21 with only 2 ft of freeboard it's a lot easier but many boats a lot bigger and with higher gunwalls than yous have no problem netting fish safely. I know it's easy to get excited when that big one comes alongside, but if you let the fish tire themselves out it will make netting them easier. I fish solo sometimes and nothing is more challenging than netting that big one by yourself! Good luck and keep catching! Bob

Good point Bob! Thanks.

We tow our dingy on the port hip while fishing. Keeps it out of the way and makes boating fish a lot easier. But we don't use downriggers. If you do troll with downriggers then the best option is to just net them out the side of the cockpit.

We always turn the boat so we are working the fish off the side of the boat. You could work the fish on one side all the time. It means a little back a forth with steering but with The autopilot and remote it’s a lot easier
