I am considering installing the Volvo Penta Neutra-Salt Flush Kit on my cutwater. The website says it can be installed on any gasoline inboard or stern drive Volvo engine. I am guessing that it can also be installed on a diesel engine. is this a correct assumption since it's an engine-driven sea water pump? Does anyone have any experience with this flush system??Thanks for any advice - Bill

I think I can now answer my own question. I called a Volvo marine diesel mechanic in Houston who does not recommend the Neutra-Salt flush system for diesel engines. Unlike gasoline engines where the sea water circulates throughout the motor, sea water in the diesel engine has limited exposure to a copper or nickel plate which in turn transfers heat from the antifreeze that circulates throughout the motor. So, in essence, the marine diesel has limited exposure to circulating sea water. Hopes this helps someone considering this flush system. Bill

Bill,
I do not necessarily agree with your mechanic. The raw water system does have veins that can get clogged and thus reduce the cooling capability of the heat exchanger. However a flush system may be overkill. After three years on my boat I did a rydlyme flush and it did a great job and even at that, I am not sure that it really needed it.
