I have a 2012 R29 and received the alarm (Neutral Protect). I've had it a few times but now the boat won't start.

Is the switch inside of the shifter arm? I'm positive I'm in Neutral when starting. Is there a way to bypass the switch in the meantime. I have a charter tomorrow and somewhat desperate.

Thanks

If you do a search for "Yanmar neutral safety switch" you should be able to find the information you are looking for. I had intermittent start problems on my 6BY2-150 and rather than trying to make adjustments to the existing switch position I replaced it with a new switch. The new switch has changed to a much more robust design. Good luck.

I'm looking online for a replacement neutral safety switch for my 6BY2-260 and having no luck.

What website did you use to order?

I ordered it from Hatton Marine in Seattle Wa. 206-283-5501. I had to call them and they were able to look up the correct part number and order it. It took a few weeks to get the part.

I’m not familiar with your engine as I have the 4BY2. The neutral safety switch on my transmission is on the port side of the transmission by the shift linkage. There is an adjustment on the lobe that depresses the switch. If the switch is bad it could be bypassed by cutting the wires and joining them together. I had to replace my switch some time ago.

Correction on my previous post, my engine is also the 4by2. The part number I ordered for the neutral safety switch was 120270-77102. Sorry for the confusion however Hatton Marine should be able to help you.

Before you replace the switch, check the adjustment. It is located as stated by Gansett Ranger. When you have the symptom try depressing the switch by pushing a small blade flat screwdriver in between the lobe and the switch and then have someone try to start the engine. If it kicks over then adjust the switch and you should be golden.

They stepped on my neutral safety switch when breaking my oil pressure sender under a warralty recall job. While waiting for a new switch, I bridged it with 6” of 14 gauge wire and two bullet plugs. When I put in the new switch, I kept the bridge just in case.

Connectors at Home Depot.
