Neutral throttle safety switches(?)

I know some aspects of this issue have been covered in earlier posts (I found the great photo of the mechanical switch) but, before I start tearing things apart I thought I would find out if there are 2 systems for neutral position or just one. I have a momentary style switch replacement for the engine compartment however I was wondering if there is something in the throttle housing itself that determines if the throttle is neutral or not as well. If so I would appreciate some feedback from other users. I will probably try to adjust and lubricate system/cables as this it probably what causes the failure. Currently I no longer shut off the engine to avoid being in compromised situations on the water and at the fuel dock and it needs to be fixed. I would think that a proximity switch might make more sense than the mechanical system at the engine end but we will see after switch is replaced.

I can't answer as a 100% sure answer, but the throttle is cabled direct to the transmission. You should check to make sure that the cable is adjusted properly and has not slipped. This could cause the neutral to not be in position when your throttle handle seems to be in neutral. Additionally, if you are having the issue and know you are in fact in neutral try jumping out the switch and see if it cranks. Just make sure you are securely tied in case the engine does start and you are in gear. This will confirm if your switch is the culprit.

Thanks knotflying. That is the direction in which I was headed. Maybe I will still hear from someone who has dismantled the throttle box.

I have removed the cover for my throttle to tighten it up and require more force to move the throttle. There is a screw to apply more friction. I do not recall anything else that would trigger the neutral warning. I can only assume that the warning is triggered when the neutral safety switch is in the open position and this would send the message electronically. I can't imagine there being two points that would trigger the message.
