I just received my new 21EC and am having a (landlocked) blast on freshwater lakes in northern Alberta. Getting to know her; I've been wondering about what seems to be an oversized swim platform and the potential loss of power. The prop wash seems to just brush under the rear of the platform. I haven't seen this configuration on any other 21EC pic online. Anyone else have the larger swim platform? Nice fishing deck, tho! Also, any hints to compatible and acceptable coolant (red) top-up for 3ym30 would be appreciated. Can't find anything out here....other Canucks with same issues?

Can't help you with the coolant, but my new 21EC (April) also has the new swim platform (new this year I believe). Don't remember all the reasons for the change, but one of the improvements with it is that it's got one more step on the fold out ladder compared to the old one. Can't say I"ve noticed any loss of power compared to what people report on here, but also haven't been out in really bad seas or really heavily loaded.

Hi Blue. Regarding the coolant, there has been an extensive discussion in the past about the type and brands of coolant and the importance of not mixing brands. You should do a search and see what comes up. Happy sailing.

I can't think of any reason the swim platform would reduce engine power. Power is already applied when the prop completes its rotation. However, the platform could increase frictional drag. I wouldn't think by much.

How about posting a photo of the new type of swim platform?

Wow, this thing really works! Sorry I haven't replied to your gratious comments! I have been having administrative problems with the site. Shows me I'm logged in - keeps asking me to log in, again and again. When I work out the bugs, I will post pictures. Thanks for your comments, all valid and helpful, thanks. Of course, no actual power loss, only maybe slows momentum. I haven't played too much under speed since I'm still breaking in. Coolant issue, hope not to have to flush and replace, but can't find Yanmar brand here...problem! Hoping to keep warranty issues on the up and up.

Check in your owner's manual for specifications for the coolant and then find a name brand which meets them. I notice you mentioned "red". Could be that a Canadian thing? Ours is "green" (or maybe yellow, I guess) but if you can match the JIS, SAE, or ASTM number(s) listed in the manual, you will be just fine.

I do notice that most manufacturers have stopped listing the numbers on the container (must confuse the users) but you can find them on the web site for the product in question. Try Texaco, Havoline, or Prestone sites. We just used Prestone Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant which matched the specs in our manual. If you don't mind doing the mixing yourself, it is generally cheaper in the long run to buy the concentrated containers. They charge a lot of money for the water and the convenience of just pouring it in. Distilled water is recommended for the mix.

And the difference in price, especially if there is a WalMart or equivalent in your area, would make even a flush-and-replace a deal, let alone having a ready source for topping up without worrying about mixing brands again. However, my (limited) knowledge says if the specs match, they should mix OK anyway. I have seen arguments both ways and only am guessing at that knowing how specs are set by the various organizations.

There should be no effect on warranty provided you can show that you used equivalent (i.e. matching specs) for oils and coolants.

Just noticed that "Equinox" has a great pic of the larger swim platform already available, for those who asked!
