New CDC dog importation rules

I will add to the previous post as an Island resident: don't assume that San Juan Island vets will be able to help. They are understaffed year round and may not be able to handle requests from visitors during the Summer season (and most especially not on weekends).

I *imagine* that CBP and CDC will delay this policy ... but who knows.

I'm having a hard time getting my Seattle Vet (who is USDA accredited) to even return my calls...

Our application for the US Certification form is in “processing” stage. Our vet called the USDA who said they were extremely busy and doing the ones with the closest date to leave the US. Today they are processing the certificates for those leaving on June 20. The women I spoke with using the Iowa vet just got hers. She leaves the US Saturday.

I got it! The Certification of US issued rabies vaccine! I heard that August was going to be a phase-in month with September being the hard enforcement month. But who knows? I’m just glad that that we have ours in hand. It is possible… Now for the CDC Dog Import form coming back into Friday Harbor! Kudos to Prescott Animal Hospital for their diligence and time it took to do this. It took them an afternoon and daily checking.

Just talked to Office Rimer (sp?) at the CBP Friday Harbor office and she said that we can continue to use Roam since we have Nexus. She said we do not need to physically check in just because we have a dog on board but we will have his papers in order.

@sfladgard are you saying they can continue to clear us on the water? That would be super helpful as we go to Canada about once a month or more either by water or land.

Has anyone understood how this will be handled by people in Point Roberts who cross the border several times daily? It doesn't make a lot of sense and seems about as well prepared as the "RealID" enforcement.

I've been having a really hard time finding a vet that can do this and when I first called they didn't even have the paperwork they needed from the CDC to do it.

That is what I was told; apparently cbp has more to do than play veterinarian. To follow up, I just used the cdc "dogbot" and it gave me a link to the import form and it can't find the page. Same for rabies vax forms, no page. Pathetic.

update: was finally able to get the import form to populate correctly, mission accomplished

The CDC dog rules changed yesterday. You will not need to jump thru hoops (as I did) and get a USDA vet to certify microchip and rabies vaccination now. You do not need the US Certification of Rabies vaccination form endorsed by the USDA. Now, you only need to file the CDC Dog Import Form, which is now valid for multiple entries over 6 months. And even that form has become simpler. I think someone powerful (possibly Canada) got the CDC to finally listen with one week to implementation…

Good news! Not a surprise, I guess -- either that they relented somewhat or that it occurred annoyingly last-minute -- but nice to see and to know. (Now I am glad I didn't buy that portable printer! Not yet anyway )
