I have a brand new in-the-box Garmin GHP-10 1.2L hydraulic pump (part # 010-00705-64) for sale for $440, half the price from Garmin. I ordered the pump as a warranty replacement for my existing pump in my 2016 RT 29S, and then decided to upgrade to the Garmin SmartPump, which sells for $2,699 plus tax and installation. If you need to replace your hydraulic pump outside the warranty period (2 years, I believe) and don't want to pay the price for the SmartPump upgrade, this would be a great deal for you.

Damn wish I knew that a month ago! $ 850.00 from Garmin, so that is a great price.

Ah, too bad! You're just the person I was looking for.

what benefits are you getting from the smartpump upgrade?

I’m not in the market for a pump (knock on wood) but I was also wondering what the smart pump does for you. I don’t have a smart pump but I still have shadow drive and auto-guidance, and the autopilot seems to perform quite well at different speeds and a wide range of sea conditions. I looked at Garmin’s description of the smart pump online but couldn’t find any value added. Maybe I didn’t look thoroughly enough.

My new smartpump is not yet fully installed, so I can't give you my personal experience. I bought it because I have had two GHP 10 pumps fail due to internal leakage that caused my boat to steer to port when going from autopilot steering to standby. In manual steering, the boat steers easily to port and hard to starboard. This could be due to the pump being marginally designed for our boats or dirty hydraulic fluid. The smartpump is an upgraded design that works on a broader range of boats.

That is very helpful information (and a bit worrisome). Thank you! Coming back to my home port recently I had the same symptoms. On manual steering the boat wanted to steer way to port. I could briefly steer it to starboard by steering hard over to the lock position but it would only briefly lock for a second or two and then I would have to turn the wheel to the right some more, keeping up this game of continually turning to starboard just to make it go straight. The autopilot Heading Hold seemed to work fine though and that’s what got me home so I didn’t suspect the pump. I did find a leak on one of the fittings on the back of the manifold attached to the pump though and assumed that was the problem. I haven’t had the boat out since, but sitting at the dock, the wheel won’t stay in the lock position - when turning either right or left, it just keeps turning by increments after only briefly locking. I have a flybridge by the way and both wheels are doing the same thing. I would be interested to know if this is similar to your experience. (I guess I’m not helping you sell your pump, sorry!)

I have a smartpump on our 31. We had two of the original pumps replaced early on in our ownership.

The two features that I see you get with the smartpump are:

1. Greatly increased reliability. We have had no issues with the smartpump.
2. Easy to add a rudder position indicator

I agree with both posts above. Same symptoms with our pump, and the new SmartPump performed well on sea trial. Experience with the GHP 10 pump seems to vary a lot as we know several owners who have not had any problems. So our half-price new pump may be a good option for someone. The SmartPump costs $2,699, and installation, including a new power cable and isolation valves on the hydraulic lines (which Ranger doesn't install) added another $958.
