New prop on the market! I am wondering if anyone or knows someone who has one on a Ranger Tug

Bunch of us have them on order. I don’t think they are shipping quite yet. I’m current killing a Hill Marine Signature four blade. Better than the Yamaha 4 blade but still a bit of vibration around 2k rpms. Will update when/if the Sharrow arrives.
 
Interesting, but I am always a cynic with new innovations, there is always a trade off with load etc. and I would want to see the impact on the engine. Also the cost from what I saw is around 5K. One would have to see what their typical cruise speed is and run the numbers to see how long it would take to break even. I have a Classic, so speed is not important. I own a boat so cost is a given and if I want economy I would go on someone else's boat and pay for their gas. :lol:
 
Can't one this season. Looking forward to seeing the results from RT owners that purchased one. 20K I would leave the prop that's on it.
 
I'm certainly paying attention and asked Sharrow Props to keep me informed. I'm also afraid of the new "snake oil", but hopefully this is a real improvement on standard props. Whoever goes first... good luck! And keep us informed, please.
 
Does anyone have an update on the Sharrow props? I received an email from them back in February say they would be calling before March to detail out the order and give work out delivery timing. I have yet to receive a call but I was hoping someone would bite the bullet before me. 😀
 
i honestly don't understand the physics here. The power/torque has to come from somewhere, so even if the prop is more efficiently grabbing the water, isnt it going to require more torque to drive and therefore put more load on the engine at a certain rev range?

what am I missing?

It’s a traction play. If you can grab more water at a certain rpm, you get more power.

Imagine if your car tires slipped 20% per rotation on a normal basis, and somebody created a tire that only slipped 10% per rotation.

Well said. Anytime you transfer power from one form to another, there is a loss. In this case cavitation and vortexes at the tip of the prop. Reduce losses anywhere along the power train, the less power you need at the front end.
 
Just went to their website to order, and now the $2K model is $5K? Dang, did I miss my opportunity? I'd do it at $2K, but $5K is harder to swallow! :?

Thankfully I have an OB! Those IB $'s are craaazzyyyy! :cry:
 
At that cost these may make awfully tempting targets for thieves 🙁

my conclusions are that its more efficient at idle speeds and gets up on plane faster. but once on the plane the delta is smaller.
I could see benefits therefor for folks that are travelling at displacement speeds in our boats but thats it. I'd hazard a guess that most folks arent doing watersports requiring faster holeshot performance.

Once boats are on plane where I spend most of my time, the delta is not worth the cost of the prop.

looks like it will be good for big tankers and lake water ski boats.
 
I had noted the same as Gavin, in that the delta at planing speeds is considerably smaller, but not negated altogether.

I am on plane for short bursts with the occasional long stretch - and spend much of my time cruising, and this is where Sharrow shines, so it'll be worth my investment.

But again, only at $2K... NOT $5K! :shock:
 
I have been wondering if the folks at Ranger could get a demo prop and provide some performance data on an actual Ranger Tug.
 
interesting thought. I guess the question these days for Ranger is which boat with which engine!! 🙂
 
Got a call from Jeff at Sharrow recently. I am hoping to have their field team on my boat late this month to do some testing while they are in the mid Atlantic area. Then it will be 6ish weeks to manufacture and ship my prop. Late August I’m guessing I will see it. Also they fix it if you hit something. So that to me might be worth 5k if I own the boat for 2 or 3 years :lol: .

I was told the 2k sharrow prop won’t be out for at least another year. Those will be cast in standard sizes.
