Hello all- purchasing a 2014 EC 21 this week. Was surprised to learn boat now comes w a Volvo . Anyone know why the switch from Yanmar? More importantly how will it perform as compared?

All Ranger Tugs (and possibly Cutwaters) now come with Volvo engines. Ranger Tugs dropped Yanmar as their preferred engine starting in late 2012... reasons for this are best told by Ranger themselves. I understand that Volvo does provide Ranger with superior service.

I see no reason to doubt Ranger's decision on their preferred engine supplier at this time.

I understand that the Volvo engines being installed in all Ranger Tugs are quieter than the Yanmar engines. In general, the new Volvo engines Ranger are installing have a few more horse power than the previous Yanmar engines, although this isn't true for the R-21EC I believe... but then the R-21EC's Volvo engine may sip less fuel than it's previous Yanmar engine!

Thank you the rapid response. Excited to take delivery in a week or so. I know I'm getting into a "slow boat" for sure. Kind of where we're at now days. Still have my Mastercraft LT1 for zipping around inland lake. I understand that top end on the EC 21 is around 9-10 MPH. Is that true or more like 7-8. Also if I upgrade props down the road or have the existing prop reworked is it possible to pick up a couple mph? Realizing exactly what I'm getting in to the idea of 12 mph vs 7-8 for safety reasons sound better. Only curious and I'm sure this topic has been discussed several times. So....I'm a Johnny come lately I suppose.

A basis with diesel engines; they operate best if set up correctly. One should use a prop that allows the engine to reach "max rated rpm", plus 200 (or so) rpm to allow for accumulating "stuff" in the boat.

On my R21EC, I was never able to reach max rated rpm; it was about 200 rpm less. Talked with Ranger folks, they offered to swap out props. The general conversation on this board, at the time, was that all of us R21EC folks were getting different max rated rpm, all using the same prop. I felt it made no sense to mess around with props. Perhaps the differences were the tachs.

I saw slightly more than 10 knots (GPS) surfing down wind in big waves. Usually, max speed was around 8 to 9 knots, depending on wind and waves.

Thanks Gene - appreciate response and education...

Actually John, I wasn't precise. 😳 The engines all had the same "max rated rpm", I believe it was 3400 rpm. I really should have said none of us had max rated rpm when operating at full rpm in gear. Some were less, some more.

Out of gear my Yanmar would attain 4000, m/b 4200 rpm. I can't remember what the governor limited it to.

I was also owned a sailboat, a CS30, during that period. It had a Volvo engine. Really nice little engine; I liked it (also liked the Yanmar). It was propped correctly and hit max rated rpm exactly. Lucky! 😀
