Hey everyone,
My wife and I toured the new R-27 OB at the Newport boat show a few months ago and loved it. We are in the process of trying to figure out what we want and if the space will work out for our two daughters to go on longer trips with us. One question that has popped into our heads and never really got addressed was how much bigger are the interiors of the R29S? Is there much of an increase over the newer R27? We have found the there are quite a few R29S in our price range used or we can do a new R27, any issues to look out for on an R29s a few years out (say 2012 and newer)?

Cheers

Hmmmm..... start here - http://www.tugnuts.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11820

At first blush the R27/OB and the R29 S will appear very similar as their cabin interiors look alike. However, as you start to look everywhere it will become apparent these's a huge difference in space. Every thing on the starboard side is wider and more comfortable, along with the awesome island berth in the bow section.

Depending on the age of your daughters the R29 S's cave berth might work for them. It would/could be very tight using the R27/OB's cave for them.

Of course the R27/OB has a big advantage when it comes to cruising speed.... at least a factor of 2.

The R29 S with its 10' beam vs. the 8.5' beam for the R27/OB will offer less rock&roll and result in a better ride for y'all.

Good luck ... The R29 S does have more useful space than what the R27/OB offers.

I'll parrot most of what Baz just said.
Last year when we were looking to buy a Ranger, the only real issue (money aside) was the speed of the OB 27 vs the 10 ft beam stability and dinghy convenience.

We opted for the stability mostly because we were coming from a 12 ft beam boat. I don't mind going slow. I would rather hit a log at 10 knots than 20 knots....and that is a huge issue here in Puget Sound and the SJI.

There is more room in the 29. No doubt. The Head and shower are "better" in my opinion in the 29. The Fwd berth is more roomy and the made up bed is a wonderful feature...

Both have modern electronics. Both are well built boats. Both "Do what they do" quite well. There is no "Bad" choice here....just a matter of deciding what will work for you and your boating family/life.

Best of luck to you!!

I agree with the above responses. The added beam of the 29 does a lot for roominess and for stability. It does mean that if you want to trailer the boat, you need wide load permits. They are not difficult to get, nor are they too expensive, but it does require some planning and leg work.

The biggest difference to me is in the sleeping accommodations. The walk around queen bed in the forward stateroom is a real plus. The mid-berth, commonly called the cave, is quite a bit roomier. I think of it as sleeping in a pup tent rather than in a foot locker.

I also love the sliding pilothouse door on the 29s built prior to 2015. The new ones eliminated that feature, and some people have posted that they don't find it useful, but I love it.

Finally, speed is a factor for some people. If you only have a weekend, and want to go somewhere a fair distance away, the R27 outboard will get you there much quicker. For me the journey IS the destination, and slower is fine with me. The R29 is still faster than a cruising sailboat or a full displacement trawler style yacht, and lots of people own those!

As for buying new or used, with proper care a boat will last a very long time. Ours is a 2012 and still looks and feels new.

You won't go wrong with either boat. Good luck in making your choice!
