New R23 buyer with questions

More questions...

Does anyone know the size of the center cockpit storage area on the R-23. I'm looking at purchasing an inflatable dinghy and storing it deflated in that area. The shipping size states 41" x 24" x 12". Will it fit?

Hi Peter,

I am not with my boat until Sunday but am pretty confident that the dinghy would fit in that space given the measurements that you gave. I thought I had that compartment measured and on my phone but it is the only one that I didn't measure.

As discussed before, that space gets wet with rain. Not a lot of water by any means but it would be wet during the winter months. I am guessing that you plan to remove the dinghy for winter storage but mention the moisture issue as mildew is a killer on inflatable boats over the long haul.

Thanks Jim. I was about to pull the trigger on the dinghy due to a special temporary seasonal price but decided to hold off for a day. We will be doing our day 2 orientation tomorrow with Tim and so I can measure then. Like you, I think its large enough too but wanted to make sure. Hopefully the dinghy is still available tomorrow afternoon. 🙂

I have the SeaEagle 385ft FastTrack inflatable kayak which packs down into its bag measuring 25" x 18" x 8" and easily fit into our R-27/OB center cockpit locker with tons of room to spare. I can even place my wife's collapsable wheelchair in the locker along with the kayak as well as two large full size fenders and all the kayak accessories, and still have room to spare. I think you will find the R-23's center cockpit is very accommodating for your deflated dinghy.

I was at my R-27/OB today and measure the usable space in the center cockpit's locker.

It was 31" wide, 18" high from the aft flooring and 54" long from aft bulkhead to front of the sea water strainer.

As an aside, I still notice 1.5" of standing fresh water in the center cockpit's bilge area. I now have a pretty good explanation for this.

1) It's rain water... and we''ve had a lot of rain in past few days and the transom platform is expose to rain fall.

2) The water enters the bilge area where the auto bilge pump is located via the 3/4" seep hole between the cockpit's center locker and the well area under the rear transom platform. Somehow rain water is entering the well under the transom platform. The only way I see this happening is through the center drain plug in the engine's well. What I did was to place some food coloring liquid in the well under the transom platform after soaking up its water. The water in the bilge area with the auto bilge pump was colored with the food coloring. Proof enough for me. 😱 😀

3) A further test will be to place a bucket of fresh water in the engine's well to see how on earth it works its way into the well beneath the platform and eventually into the bilge area via the 3/4" seep hole and where the auto bilge pump is located. There's a leak somewhere for sure.

I'm getting very tired of soaking up this fresh water in my attempt to discover where the heck it's coming from. 😉

Thanks for the measurements Barry. I also had a chance to measure today and I think the length was a little shorter but the width and depth were about the same. So I went ahead and purchased the dinghy.

I'm sorry to hear about your water leak problem. I'll keep an eye on it on our R-23.

You will never ever fold it to that size again, if you're good, you'll get close. I use the 12v air pump reversed to vacuum the air out, even then it just doesn't fold up as small.

Good point. It'll be interesting to see how small I can get it. There is wiggle room however.
