This afternoon we had a water stop by Canadian Fish and Game as we passed the entrance to Poets Cove on our way to Ganges.. We were their third stop in 15 minutes. There is a new Interim Sanctuary Zone on the west shore of North Pender Island that stretches north along the shore up to Thieves Bay. It extends off shore about 1/3 mile or so. You are not allowed into this area. There is a second ISZ on the east tip of Saturna extending northeast and southwest from the island tip.
These ISZs are for marine mammal protection.
There are also new Yellow and Orange zones all over the southern Gulf Islands and around the southern part of Vancouver Island. The yellow zones restrict boat distance to any whales to a minimum of 400 meters. The new Orange zones restrict the minimum distance from any whales to 1,000 meters.
Our water stop was educational in nature. The F&G folks were very friendly and gave us maps and documents detailing these new rules. These new rules started in June and last until the end of October. Not sure if they will be in place next year.
So, if your following the course advice from Mr. Garmin around the west side of North Pender Island, please extend your distance from the shore so you can help keep the whales happy! No whales there today though....
