Alex, the plumbing was the reason I never got around to installing the gages I bought. Good luck! 🙂

The first time I took TUGLET out; I checked to see if I could rotate those overhead hatches.

Also checked into an opening center windshield, it was priced at almost $800, uninstalled. Got to looking and realized running with the v-berth hatch open would block airflow to an open center windshield. 😱

SlackwaterJack is too modest. Check out his other re-designs of Ranger's popular boats. Click on the picture to expand it. How about his version of the "R-21 Crabber":

He can get a little extreme, like his idea to prevent prop effect by eliminating the propeller:

Here's is concept of an "Offshore R27" with a 10" higher cabintop and 10" lower pilothouse which provides easy dinghy storage/access. Also depicted is his versions of an Offshore R25:

Here are his versions of an Offshore 29:

In my humble opinion SlackwaterJack's concept of the adding an extra foot on an R21 results in amazing possibilities. For those of us that single hand a lot (read: wife prefers doing crafts at kitchen table at home) the R-22 would be perfect and certainly would cost a bunch less money than an R25 without sacrificing very much. I think it deserves a second look, make sure you click on it for a full size view.

I had forgotten how talented SlackwaterJack is! I vote for his R22!!!!

I find on our R25 (MY2010) that when the boat under speed suddenly encounters and hits/slaps a big wave the engine throttle lever has a tendency to change its position downwards under the impact, or should I say reaction. This has the very annoying side affect of revving up the engine and can be very disturbing and somewhat dangerous.

There needs to be more friction for the throttle lever to avoid this happening -- and so far I've not found a means for increasing the lever's friction.

The door for the head-room needs a latch mechanism so it can be held open. Without such a mechanism the door is free to swing about when underway or even when stationary if the boat is leaning to port/starboard.

There needs to be a grab handle in the head-room to allow a person to raise themselves up. 😉

The three wooden openings above the windshield that provide shelf/storage space should have elastic netting across the openings to avoid items flying out when in rough water conditions. I had one event where an object flew out and landed on my engine throttle lever and rocketed the boat forward in an alarming way.

The hatch bug screens need to be designed so that they can stay in place when securing the hatches down when underway. As they are currently designed, this is impossible as the latches get in the way and can in fact break through the screen material if care not taken.

Special attention needs to be given to firmly secure the front fenders when underway that typically are positioned alongside the helm window and on the opposite port side in same position. Most people seem to simply jam the top portion of the fender between the outside cabin wall and the rearmost vertical chromed pole. This is OK for most weather conditions -- but in rougher water conditions these two fenders can get easily dislodged, fall and hang overboard.

There needs to be one or two more lights in the cave. The one we have is located way behind the hanging garments, is difficult to get at and find, and offers little light to the cave contents -- even the large electrical rotary switches are hard to see and operate when the cave is filled with hanging garments.

The gap behind the chart table hinge needs to be sealed in same manner to avoid things sliding of the table when lifted which then slide off and down through the gab and being lost for ever. I simply have placed a 32" (approx) wooden clothe hanger rod to cover this gap.

An intercom between helm and cockpit area would be a very useful addition in my opinion.

Sorry about all the above as it's more than one thing I know.... and we really do love our R25. Many of the things I've mentioned can quite likely be added by people who have the inclination and skills.... I will most certainly be looking at doing some of these things/additions myself. 🙂

Barry,
A number of the items you mention we had either done on Solitude or have done on Karma. Take a look at our website for pictures ( www.rangertug25-solitude.com ).

As for an intercom, we have purchased a set of the Eartec Headsets. You can find them at Fisheries Supply or at their website
www.eartec.com . These work great when docking or departing as I can move around Karma and stay in communication with Maureen without yelling or raising your voice. It make close quarter operations much more civilized.......

As always, you and Gil as well as any other "Tugnutter" are welcome to come aboard Karma at the Rendezvous or any other gathering and see the changes we have made.

And of course the R-36 with a 13'/14' beam !!!

1) The shelf above the GPS screen should be cut back because when you are sitting at the helm you can't see the top of
the screen.
2) The Radio position is also terrible for viewing the screen. Oh, for a mere $175.00 you can buy a mic with a display for your $200.00 radio???? Whatz up with dat!!!

I wish my R-25 had the same rocket engine Baz has in his.

Are you referring to my posted 17.4 Kts max speed ? 😀

Baz,

No I am not referring to your posted top speed.
In your post you mentioned an object fell out of the overhead onto the trottle lever, "Rocketing" the boat forward.

I tried dropping a brick on my throttle lever.
The boat still did not "Rocket" forward, as you claim your boat does.
What do I need, a rocket engine, or a bigger brick?

Let's see...... the brick would be cheaper and easier to "install"....... go with the brick first! If that does not work, I guess you move onto the "rocket" engine!

If the brick drops when the boat is moving forward and moves the throttle lever surely the engine will rev up and propels the boat forward faster. Maybe my use of 'rocket' was an exaggeration -- but I would assume you understand what I'm saying. 😉

...then you may just be goofing around here -- dunno. :?

Just goofing around Baz.

The idea of an R-22 is really appealing to me. If they could build one as drawn by Slackwater Jack and keep the price around $75K well equipped (AC/Heat, Nav etc.) along with a little extra speed (12Knts Cruise) ...I think I would pull the trigger on one this summer! The weight also needs to stay around 4,000 lbs so that a new boat doesn't require a new pick-up truck (I have a Honda Ridgeline).

Mike

A couple more inches at the helm station of the R-25. I can't stand up straight.

This is my first boat so obviously I am not an expert on boats.

It took me 3 years to make the decision to buy a boat the reason being directly related to the fact that I drive a mixer truck. From my perch I can see over peoples fences. Where I live I would bet that 1 in every 5 yards has in it what I call a broken dream. It's sitting on a trailer with the grass growing up through the trailer because you can't get the mower under the trailer, 1 tire is flat, it has a shredded blue tarp flapping in the wind, was white at one time but now it's green, has 1 or 2 broken legs coupled to gas sucking pigs that no one can afford to run for anymore. I was determined to try and learn from their mistakes. The fewer systems to go haywire and the cheaper it is to run the better for me. The 21EC has so far not let me down in these departments I can tow it easily with my Nissan Frontier and it fits nicely in my yard for winter storage.

I would like to see sound proofing under the cabin floor or something, engine noise in cabin could be fixed. Spilling fuel from vent could easily be dealt with during construction. Maybe a system to carry a kyak on the roof.

I think Meartron is now making a system to display temp, pressure etc for some of Yanmars mechanical engines.

Dave

The Maretron system sounds good until you start looking up the prices
EMS100 = $400
Yanmar cable for EMS100 = $200
DSM250 Display = $850

Then I think you would have to add/change transceivers, NEMA 2000 connectors, etc. Gets pretty expensive. 😱

I know, I know, BOAT is an acronym that stands for Break Out Another Thousand.

I would like to have a Wallas diesel stove/heater as an option in the R-21 EC....don't know how many times I've stayed off the water some weekend because I didn't wanna sleep buried under a half dozen blankets!

I, too, like the idea of a little more speed (but I don't need to plane), beam to 8.5 ft, and more cabin length to accommodate an enclosed head (and maybe a shower). Unless the hull is changed to a semi-displacement hull, adding two feet to an 21EC will only net a little under 0.5 mph on the hull speed. Why not modify the stepped hull from the cutwater for the hull of a 21EC? I still want a boat that looks like the 21EC, though.

No Hurry

Bill,

Funny you should bring up the Cutwater...I was thinking that they should have their own 22'-23' version ;-)
